Yingluck granted 10-year UK visa, says BBC Thai website

The United Kingdom is reported to have granted a ten-year visa to former Thailand prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who has been ruled in absentia to a five-year prison term back home for her role in her government’s rice-pledging scandal.

 

The BBC Thai website has quoted a close aide as saying that Yingluck is now free to travel in and out of the UK, although each visit can only be for a maximum of six months.

Yingluck is the youngest sister of Thaksin Shinawatra, who is also on the run from a jail term in Thailand on corruption-related charges.

 

Thailand’s first female prime minister, Yingluck disappeared a few days before the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders delivered a verdict in a case against her in the rice-pledging case in August last year.

 

The Court jailed her to five years in jail for negligence as the head of government and chair of the National Rice Policy Committee.

 

She was later spotted in many countries, including Japan and London, sometimes with her brother.

 

The BBC website said that the visa had been granted to Yingluck under a passport issued by a European country. Her Thai passports have been revoked following the court ruling and her escape from Thailand.

 

A close aide of Thaksin told BBC Thai that many countries had been willing to give his sister the travel documents she sought.

The implication of this is that the UK specifically and several other countries in general do not recognize the legitimacy of the court case against her.

 

I bet Prayut nearly choked when he heard it!

 

Thailand- if you want to have international respect for your country and system of justice, you need to have a respectable system of justice and put an end to these 'show trials' where political opponents are brought down. The proper way to hand over power from one government to the next is through an election.

 

You will be a laughing stock until you manage this....

I don't think the specifics of the court case had any bearing on the decision to issue her with a visa. It was about the authority of a court under a military leadership trying to criminally charge the PM they ousted in a coup. I doubt the decision was a tough one. It would have been more shocking if they had refused her visa.

Ouch this has to hurt the military junta and it's 2 supporters.  Contrary to what. Prayuth really believes, the world doesn't support his military rule and see Yingluk as a political refugee

After the election when Prayut is given his marching orders, he goes to the UK meets up with Yingluk, hello love you fancy going for a drink, and a chat about old times.

It would be even nicer If they said something like, Welcome Prayuth, this is my good friend Yingluk and she will interpret during the meeting and Boris will be doing your petting and ear rubbing.

Anybody can apply for a visa with a ten year validity if they can demonstrate a need to travel to the UK on a regular basis.
Whilst these are normally issued to business travellers, a number of our members spouses have them.

 

If you need to visit the UK regularly. If you need to visit the UK regularly over a longer period, you can apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa that lasts 2, 5 or 10 years. You can stay for a maximum of 6 months on each visit.

Never mind, she can reside in knightsbridge,  with other super-rich ex-pats from Asia, The Middle East, and Russia most of whom achieved their wealth through corrupt and dubious means, that left millions of their fellow countrymen starving and internally impoverished, and who once in the UK can and usually do indulge in a vulgar and risable display of riches which is the very antithesis of good taste and reserve, those rare qualities that can only come from a good upbringing, solid learning, a sense of history, class, and dignity.

There are a number of Countries who now even offer citizenship in the EU if you invest over £500,000 that type of money is peanuts to her and her brother .

As a Brit I am proud my country has given Thailand's first female PM a long visa and not thrown her back to the junta dogs. She should retire gracefully as she did her bit and is held in fond regard by most Thais. Don't forget, not voted out, thrown out and that is not the British way.

This will make interesting dialog, the UK and the EU still carry on business together as usual, one wonders just what senior people Prayut will actually meet on this EU visit and one should imagine that Prayut has been in their discussions even if it was between low ranked  officials..

My comment was about us getting 10yr visas for Thailand !!
