Bank of Thailand Intervenes to Manage Baht's Exchange Rate
Folks may want to consider the future implications for THB as a result of what is happening to the YEN. Historically, the Japanese companies in Thailand have not repatriated their profits because Japanese interest rates have been negative, this means the BOJ charges an overnight fee for holding that money. Now that BOJ has raised rates there is an incentive for those companies to repatriate the funds and this means selling Baht to buy YEN. The amount of overseas profit stored by Japanese companies is estimated to be in the region of USD 68 billion although not all of this in in Thailand. Nevertheless, the impact on THB could be significant. -

Nonthaburi: Project Owner Shoots Female Partner in Office, Financial Dispute Suspected
A project owner fatally shot his female business partner on October 2, before turning the gun on himself at an office in Sai Noi District, Nonthaburi. The incident is believed to be linked to financial troubles. Sai Noi police responded to a report of two individuals found dead around 18:00. at a sales office in a local housing project in Thawee Watthana Subdistrict. Accompanied by forensic doctors and volunteer responders, the authorities discovered the tragic scene. Mr. Suphot, 56, the owner of the housing project, was found seated in his office chair with a gunshot wound to his right temple, the bullet having exited through the left and lodged in his computer screen. A 9mm handgun lay on the floor beneath his chair. Nearby, Ms. Kanokwan, 54, was found lying on the floor in a pool of blood, having been shot in the head. Both were business partners, with Mr. Suphot managing the project while Ms. Kanokwan handled accounting. An employee, identified as Ms. Bee, recounted to reporters that Mr. Suphot had dismissed the staff around 17:00, stating he needed to have a private discussion with Ms. Kanokwan. Later, when staff returned to collect car keys, they knocked on the office door but received no response. Seeing bullet casings, they summoned security, who discovered the two bodies and alerted the police. Ms. Bee further stated that she had not observed any prior conflict between the two, though she recalled hearing two loud bangs, which she initially thought were related to bird-scaring gunshots, a common occurrence in the nearby fields. Ms. Kanyapat, the niece of the deceased Ms. Kanokwan, disclosed that her aunt had been sent to work at the project to recover several hundred thousand baht lent to Mr. Suphot. However, her aunt had received only small payments for her work. The two had previously argued about the unpaid debt during meetings. Mr. Khiao, a neighbour, described Mr. Suphot as a kind and calm individual. However, in recent years, Mr. Suphot had been struggling financially, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. During a conversation last month, Mr. Suphot had expressed his frustration with the worsening economic conditions. While Mr. Khiao had known Mr. Suphot for over a decade, he was not familiar with Ms. Kanokwan and did not know the specifics of their relationship. Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-03 -
