June 9, 20187 yr Hi, I'm interested in importing a laptop from Amazon US to me in Bangkok, the value is around 1700 USD. What can I expect to pay in duty etc as I have a trouble finding a clear answer on this. I believe it will be shipped with DHL. Anyone whos done this that can share their story? I would not want to be hit with a 40% duty or something similar, would really appreciate any answers regarding this! Thanks!!
June 9, 20187 yr Computers are "supposed" to be zero rated for duty to Thailand but you'll still pay VAT on the CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) cost. "I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"
June 9, 20187 yr Not quite matching your info but last year I needed a replacement laptop from my UK company. It was a refurbished HP and was sent by DHL. The only charge was VAT of 7% of the stated value (plus, I believe, the shipping cost). No duty charged.
June 9, 20187 yr If its from Amazon, they'll typically have a shipping/ customs deposit fee that shows up if the vendor even ships to Thailand- and a lot of them don't. You'll see it before you have to commit to the purchase (and I often cancel the purchase when the delivery cost is too high) I've occasionally gotten a partial refund on the customs deposit fee, but I'd count on kissing it goodbye.
June 9, 20187 yr There have been many, many, many threads on this subject, and a search might yield even more data? example: computer dhl site:thaivisa.com three recent-ish threads...
June 10, 20187 yr I just got a 700$ laptop from Amazon and paid 36$ shipping and 146$ in import taxes. Note this is estimated tax, when I bought a tablet from them last year I got app 100$ back a couple of month later. If you put your wanted laptop in the Ama basket/check-out, you can see what you totally will be paying and then decide if you want the item or not.
