Arrest warrants were issued on Sunday for eight suspected insurgents allegedly involved in the massacre of four male members of a Muslim family who went panning for gold at a canal in Narathiwat’s Sukhirin district on Thursday, provincial police deputy chief Pol Colonel Thawatchai Duksukkaew said.

The test result on 18 spent M16 cartridges found at the scene showed that five M16 rifles were used in the Thursday killing, two guns of which weren’t linked to previous violent incidents in the restive region, he said. Three other rifles, however, were allegedly used in the gun attack on April 12, 2015 that led to four villagers’ deaths in Sukhirin.

The rifles also were linked to the April 27, 2017 gun ambush that killed six paramilitary rangers in Chanae district and another more recent gun attack that left two village defence volunteers injured in Sukhirin in March, he said. This convinced the authority that the Thursday killing of Mayusoh Bado, 49, his two sons Hillme Bado, 23, and Muhamad Hadis Bado, 16, as well as his son-in-law Maroshadi Poh, 36, was committed by insurgents, he added.

Thawatchai made the comment during his announcement to the press about the result of the Narathiwat police crackdown on criminals during May 28-June 10, which led the arrest of 11 suspects and the seizure of 25 guns and 150 bullets as well as an unidentified amount of kratom and cough syrup drink.

Do they even know the names of the eight people they want to arrest?  Or is it a murder investigation that might have eight unknown perpetrators?  Will they all be swigging cough mixture?  Really, some of these so called newspaper reports beggar belief.

Three rifles still in use for 3 years.

That doesn't indicate an insurgency winding down but sustaining itself.

That would be a Thai military failure to resolving the insurgency.
