Insurgents surrender under 'homecoming' programme

By The Nation

Twenty-one suspected insurgents reported themselves to the authorities in Narathiwat province on Saturday morning to enter a programme that would absolve them of their alleged crimes.

The suspects came out of hiding in two tambon in Rusoh district to enter the “bringing people with different opinions home” programme.

They reported to the authorities at a taskforce of the 46th Ranger Regiment in Wat Suan Dhamma in Ban Plai Na village, Tambon Rusoh Ok.

They were received by Rusoh district chief Wicharn Chaisetsamphan and Colonel Pasit Charnlekha, the commander of the taskforce, as well as Pol Lt-Colonel Sakhon Promchote, deputy commander of Rusoh Police Station.

The suspects are residents of Tambon Sawor and Tambon Rusoh Ok.

The programme was initiated by the Internal Security Operations Command Area 4 to give a second chance to those who have been lured to join the insurgency movement.

Pasit said the rangers of his taskforce had been spending the past three months trying to convince relatives of the suspects that they would be safe and allowed to carry on with their daily lives if they laid down arms and reported to the authorities.

This follows last year's "Bring People Back Home project, "a half-baked public relations exercise billed as an amnesty programme" that did nothing in terms of changing the course of violence.

Like last year's program, this program will do nothing to abate the mistrust between local Malay Muslims and the Thai state. The military continues to follow defunct military and economic strategies instead of political solutions.
