After a Roof Rack, Rat Poison Pellets & Thai TV Reception

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Howdy Folks,

Back in CM after a 1.5 years absence.

Got a rat issue at the house with rats in the roof. We got our exterminator to clean them out, but since we are located on 3 rai of land among rice fields, I expect more rats. Where can I get a few kilograms of rat pellets to sprinkle around the perimeter fences?

Also after a roof rack for the car. As in the 2 horizontal bars and a mesh basket/carrier. Anyone know of a good reasonable priced shop in CM who sell them and can fit it?

Also, what's the current way to get Thai TV stations? We have some old 1 meter satellite dishes, but none of that works now. What's the best way to get Thai TV free-to-air, not interested in paid TV at the moment we're here for 2 months only.

Thanks!

Instead of sprinkling rat poison around your property ,

willy ,nilly, you need to find how the rats are getting in your

roof, usually by jumping from nearby trees,or climbing up

drain pipes, cannot help with roof rack.

You can buy an aerial and box for Thai Tv,from most

supermarkets,Amorn shop, cost about 2K that gives

you digital reception.

If you house is anything like mine, there is almost no practical way to stop rats from entering your crawl space. You can try gum traps or regular mouse traps or poison (the idea is that if you put it up in the attic, they will eat some and then get thirsty and die outside, ideally).

You repeatedly say, "We," so I assume you might have a Thai speaker with you. He/she should be able to sort you out with everything you need.

I also think you can get TV by just attaching an antenna, right? I mean if you only want Thai TV, that means the government programs and the highly entertaining entertainment shows, right? They're free.

If you hear rats in the roof again you can buy a steel rat traps, about 30 b, from most markets .Dont use poison around the place they crawl away, die a slow death and smell,

Sticky mats they will thrash around for at least a day.

For bait on trap , bit of bacon rind, burn with cigarette lighter while its wired to the appropriate place on the trap.Put in roof ,you will hear it go off

Works every time.

I found out where they were getting into our roof, tiny gap, some wire mesh from Home Pro fixed that problem.

Check out PSI for free Thai TV.  You pay only for the control box, was about 70 baht, and you get HD for the major Thai channels.  The existing dishes on your house may be PSI  dishes or compatibles..

The best cure for rats is snakes, then people start panicking about them. Rat snakes are quite shy and harmless, not so sure about some of the others though!

We have PSI boxes as suggested by ProbPossConf but I think he typo'd a zero off the price, 700 should be about right.

Happy return to the LOS.

I had a problem with rats in the roof, scattered mothballs liberally around and no rats have come back since. They just don't like the smell.

I did the same, and the rats must have been hungry,as they

ate them, the sticky mats can make a mess,as if you catch

a big rat,they can drag it around the ceiling,I use a trap,which

you can buy at most markets, catches them alive, then I just

drown them, sorry animal rights lovers, BUT they are rats, and

can cause disease, and a lot of damage with the wiring ,could

even cause a fire. P.S. for bait i use half a mini Mars bar, they

love chocolate, and it lasts a long time, were meat does not.

If I want to kill them I just use the spring loaded old style rat traps. Never wanted to try the sticky paper, not loving rats, but I see those as causing unnecessary suffering. The spring traps are instantaneous and fatal. This style of trap is available everywhere in Thailand.

Thanks mate. We'e trimmed all the trees back, they were severely overgrowing the house. Hopefully that will ease the problem.

We actually have a few snakes, being surrounded by rice fields. A few days ago the wife had to take care of one - apparently quite poisonous. We've got a small baby, so no choice there.

When we were building our house, one of the locals guys found a rat in among the bricks. He shoved it with his foot, it wouldn't go. Just hissed back. Had to take a stick and wack it a few times. It was one stubborn, GIANT rat.

Those teeth on the side look lethal.

Our gardener guy is a bit of a clutz, I'd be worried he chop his fingers off setting that one up.

Obviously you do need to take some care when setting the trap. The spring is very strong and could easily break your finger if you were careless.

Rat poison is difficult to get hold of but any Thai farmer knows where to buy. That's what I usually use.

I don't use traps because they can quite easily just mangle the rat without killing it, leaving you with the bloody job of removing it.

The glue traps are almost as bad, the animal is supposed to starve to death, how long does that take?

The cat we had did a good job with rats but decided one day that it would be a match for a cobra, which it wasn't.

Poison I'm afraid.

Never had one rat just mangled in the spring traps, either their head and neck get struck with the bar and death is pretty much immediate.  I would never use the sticky traps though, they are cruel IMO.

Keep in mind that you use rat poison and if you or your neighbours have cats, the cat population will also dwindle.
