Timing of team’s discovery in cave was matter of luck: NYT

Featured Replies

That's not a fact, they did not do it on their own, they are just a small part of a big rescue team of equally proficient divers.

They didn’t “do it” on their own ! I said they are the Best Cave Divers in the world and recognised as such!

    Fortune favours the brave.

  • The Brits got a bit lucky with the football result too ?

dont forget this was not a 2-3 man job. 1000 people worked very hard for this outcome, and it would not have been possible without them all.

No need to gloat mate, sometimes you get a better result when you don't so o..

Nothing wrong with pride, I don't see it as gloating. I had said the same to my wife, also that  it would be British divers who would find them, there's no one better that the British cave rescuers.

I agree with your comments 100%, some people are very reluctant to credit the Brits with anything.

Recognizing that Britain has produced the worlds best cave divers is not gloating.

Without this small specialist team its doubtful they would have been found so quickly

True, but this small specialist team also could not have done it without the larger team supporting them, just moving the amount of air tanks they needed took hundreds of men.

Thanks to all, don't think singling people out is what it is all about !  Big effort from many, thank you all !

"part of a big rescue team of equally proficient divers."

Totally wrong in your "all for one and one for all" statement - why did the Thai Navy Seals ask for assistance in the first place?

"Brits are probably one of the best cave-diving teams," said Dinko Novosel, head of the European Cave Rescue Commission, even before the search mission proved successful.

(That is a quote from the Los Angeles Times, by the way, just in case you are another Brit knocking Yank.)

And the reason for Dinko Novosel saying that? :-

"It's not the first time they have lent their expertise to an international rescue effort.Stanton, who was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, or MBE, in 2012, previously described his most memorable lifesaving effort as the 2004 rescue of six soldiers trapped by rising floodwaters in Mexico."

And that is only one of his efforts - I haven't even mentioned the achievements of the other two so that is why they are acknowledged as "the best in the World" and not "just a small part of a big rescue team of equally proficient divers."

Most people find it easier to criticize than Compliment....a fact and human nature...these days especially.....take courtesy and courage to complement ...to dive in a cave not knowing where one is going or what is ahead... easily everything can go against them...Bravo team!

Now it's a "bash the Brits" day is it? :post-4641-1156693976:

Known as the 'A' TEAM when it comes to rescues in the cave diving fraternity worldwide - for their experience and expertise.

Ordinary looking blokes who happen to be volunteer cave rescuers at the top of their game, turned up with no fanfare and came to help.

Bravo to them and all the others involved - is an international team effort.

They are the Elite - Ask France

Maybe we are all missing the underlying message here. Brits are masters of understatement. If the guy said he was lucky and just happened to run out of line. What he really means is that it could have been anyone in the team and it simply happened to be him.

Their mission was to set a rope for the army to follow, it is no accident that the first to find those kids was going to be the first to enter the area where they were holed up... The rope setters........ I would have thought that would be logical to most reasonable people.

So I don't really think it 'simply just happened to be them....

So too, their history is completed with stories and news of snatching Defeat from the jaws of Victory.

They are not safe yet. They should check how high the water has been where they are. & the weather bureau should be closely watching for storms -

What a 'put down' of a story and so bloody what. They did it! The Americans didn't do it. Mistake or luck - they did it!

This is the best story I've had in Thailand for 6 years. How bloody dare you insinuate that it was 'luck'. It was bloody hard work.

From a Kiwi living in Thailand.

Clearly the NYT knows as much about 'luck' as Alanis Morissette knew about 'irony'...

I really worried that no morone here would come up with this...

Anyone who thinks it is luck should watch this. Provides some insight into cave diving.

Rick and John have already been awarded the MBE in the UK for services to cave diving and cave rescue. There was quite a few others involved in the UK as well to get vital equipment hot shotted onto the flight with them. The Thais were smart getting these involved pretty much right from the get go and i personally admire them for that.

About 65,599,997 British people had nothing to do with what the three divers did in a cave in Thailand. Never understood how people who happen to have same passport feel entitled to claim some piece of achievements of others. Nationalism sucks.
