PHUKET: The storm that hit Phuket late yesterday afternoon left huge swathes of the island without power for up to six hours and forced air traffic controllers to divert several flights from landing at Phuket International Airport for safety.

A tree felled by the strong winds brought down power lines along Thepkrasattri Rd, causing a blackout for six hours in the Koh Kaew area, confirmed Kittinunt Sorndee of the Phuket office of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA).

In Kathu, areas around and including The Valley 1 housing estate and Kajonkiet International School were also affected.

Cutting weak trees close to power lines... just an idea ?

Weak trees fall across powerlines, sometimes causing a short circuit. Such weak trees can be bounced off the line in less than 5 minutes.  It is the strong trees that fall across and break the lines that are the bigger problem. Proactive approach in othe countries means no trees within 15-30 metres of transmission lines....

I often see the PEA or their contractors out clearing powerlines- it's an on-going job, not a one-off, as it is in other countries..
