Excellent news. It would have been very hard for the coach to be in there on his own. I hope they have continued success and by later today, they will all be safely above ground.

  • No reason to try to make it faster, safety is paramount.

BANGKOK/CHIANG RAI, Thailand (Reuters) - The third phase of an operation to rescue four remaining boys and their soccer coach trapped inside a flooded Thai cave began on Tuesday morning, the head of the rescue mission said.

Narongsak Osottanakorn told a news conference the latest rescue operation began at about 10:08 a.m. local time (0308 GMT).

"All five will be brought out at the same time today," he said, to cheers from reporters and rescue workers.

Just to reiterate what I commented on another thread, safety is the priority here, not speed. It is great that the procedures have been fine tuned and the assisting divers intimately attuned to the tricky bits, but I am hoping nobody gets complacent with the operation; no pressure from outside to speed things up.

All those involved are in my hero status already, but if successful today, and all divers and support personnel are extracted successfully they will become so, so much more. Rock it guys....................

I actually have the same feeling. It seems like they have been going their own way, and actually had the knowledge of how to do all the time. If not they have been taking all the right decisionsas quick and safe as possible. They have listened to themselfs and all the experienced international volounteers on place and worked as a real professional team.

That’s my concern also but hopefully the hero’s that have conducted themselves admirably so far will continue to remain vigilant and not take any unnecessary risks at the sake of haste.

Rescuers begin 'challenging' final push to free last five from Thai cave

By Patpicha Tanakasempipat and Panarat Thepgumpanat

CHIANG RAI, Thailand (Reuters) - The first eight boys rescued from a Thai cave complex are in good health overall and some asked for chocolate bread for breakfast, officials said on Tuesday as rescuers began a third and more challenging final mission to free the remaining five.

"At this moment (there are) no worrisome conditions, everyone is safe," Jesada Chokdamrongsuk, Thailand's health ministry permanent secretary, told reporters.

Two of the boys had suspected lung infections but the four boys from the first group rescued were all walking around their hospital beds.

"The kids are footballers, are strong and have high immunity," Jesada said when asked why they survived so long.

The boys had a good appetite but were mainly being given bland, easily digestible foods. However, doctors later relented after some of the boys asked for bread with chocolate topping.

They are still being quarantined from their parents because of the risk of infection and would likely be kept in hospital for a week to undergo tests, officials said.

Four more of the boys were carried on stretchers out of the labyrinthine Tham Luang cave on the Myanmar border at dusk on Monday, bringing to eight the number brought out so far after two rescue pushes on successive days.

The head of the operation, Narongsak Osottanakorn, said a final operation would be "more challenging" because one more survivor would be brought out than the previous two operations, along with three Navy SEALs who have been accompanying them.

The rescuers have been learning from experience and were two hours faster in bringing the second batch of survivors out on Monday. However, scattered monsoon rains continued to risk percolating through the limestone cave walls to flood the tunnels with water.

"I hope today we will be faster or the same speed as yesterday," Narongsak said.

A crack team of foreign divers and Thai Navy SEALS guided the boys during a nine-hour operation through nearly 4 km (2.5 miles) of sometimes submerged, pitch-dark channels from where they have been trapped for more than a fortnight.

'WE WILL PLAY TOGETHER'

People across Thailand cheered the rescue operation, including at the Mae Sai Prasitsart school where six of the trapped boys are students.

"I am very happy about those who already made it out and I think everyone will be out today," said Waranchit Karnkaew, 14, who also said the football-mad boys had been closely following games at the World Cup in Russia before they were trapped.

"I want to take my friends to lunch and we will play football together," he told Reuters.

Soccer's governing body, FIFA, has invited the boys to the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday. This seems less likely now given the need for the boys to undergo further tests.

The plight of the boys and their coach has drawn international attention since they became trapped when they went into the cave after soccer practice on June 23.

Divers, engineers, medics and others have flown in from around the world to assist.

Technology billionaire Elon Musk went into the cave on Monday and left the rescue team with a "kid-sized" submarine his company SpaceX had built, Thailand's interior Minister Anupong Paochinda said.

Musk said on Twitter: "Just returned from Cave 3. Mini-sub is ready if needed. It is made of rocket parts & named Wild Boar after kids' soccer team. Leaving here in case it may be useful in the future."

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha visited the cave to inspect the operation and was quoted by Narongsak as saying he didn't want to see this kind of incident happen again on Thai soil.

Not needed! Mr. Musk. In this country and in many others there are real human heroes. Thanks for the great effort to earn some fantastic PR anyway.

I wonder if any of the Thai "dignitaries" will make use of the complementary FIFA offer....?  Surely not.

True, but no mention of the Australian doctor / diver, I thought it was planned he would be in the cave until the end?

I understand the Aussie was only there last Saturday, day before the extractions started just to assess the boys to give them the all clear.

A TRN doctor has been there with them from the 3rd or 4th July and will likely come out with them today.

As stated, just my understanding, happy to be corrected.

Mission Day 3 begins to evacuate final five

f50d100a6836ed41a9d57c653d35ab7a.jpeg

Assistant coach Ekkapon (C)

Efforts resumed on Tuesday morning to evacuate the remaining five Mu Pa Academy football club members from Tham Luang Cave in the hope of bringing them all to safety within hours, the mission chief said.

Narongsak Osottanakorn told reporters the operation started at 10.08am with 19 divers assigned to extract four young footballers and their 25-year-old assistant coach, Ekkapon Chantawong.

He said they got an earlier start than on the previous two rescue days, Sunday and Monday, and felt confident in the experience gained.

Despite rain overnight, the water level inside the cave was similar to that of Monday, Narongsak said.

Also to be brought out on Tuesday were the physician and three Navy SEAL divers who had stayed with the remaining footballers on the Noen Nom Sao ledge where they’d been found stranded.

Flash flooding trapped the group in the cave on June 23, sparking a multinational rescue mission that had to overcome numerous difficulties, including strong currents of murky water submerging sections of the cave.

A pair of British cave divers found them on July 2, alive but exhausted on a sandy ledge above the water level.

Their state of health posed a further challenge to the rescue effort, as did the surging water levels and rough subterranean terrain.

Narongsak decided on Sunday to launch the rescue operation after being assured the water had receded and the boys’ health was improving thanks to nourishment given them by the SEALs team.

Narongsak said two of the boys evacuated on Sunday emerged with lung infections, but their condition was improving with doses of antibiotics.

The eight boys undergoing treatment at Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital were in general good health, both physically and mentally, he said.

One of them has low body temperature after spending days in the cold cave but is also improving.

To my understanding he went in, did an assessment of the boys' fitness to dive and then came out.

A Thai Navy doctor has been staying continuously throughout.

There is 1 or more Australians among the 13 expert foreign divers who together with 5 Thai divers escort the children out. But I think different people than the Dr.

Rescue mission resumes, last 5 survivors expected to emerge this evening

By Thai PBS

nanong2.jpg

The final operation to extract the remaining five survivors out of the flooded Tham Luang cave began at 10.48 am this morning.

Rescue operations commander Mr Narongsak Osotthanakorn said at a press briefing before noon that 19 international and Navy SEAL divers were sent into the cave to extract the four Wild Boars (Moo Pa) footballers and their coach.

He expected the five survivors as well as a doctor and three SEAL members who have been staying with them to emerge from the cave this evening – faster than the two previous extraction operations. Meanwhile, Mr Mongkolchai Khonchom, deputy director of Mae Sai Prasitthisart school in Mae Sai district offered his thanks to all the officials, volunteers and foreign rescuers taking part in the search and rescue operations from the very beginning.
