Thai Script On A Mac

Featured Replies

I have been trying to type Thai script but it comes out as meaningless symbols when I post it on this forum; it is Ok on my computer.

I have just recently started using a Mac. I have tried changing the text encoding but this does not seem to help. I never had this problem with windows. Is there any other Mac users out there? Any suggestions?

Go to the View menu in Safari and change the text encoding to Thai (Windows, DOS)

Tell me if there is any Thai script under my Avatar or just symbols.

I tried posting yesterday after changing to Windows, dos but still jibberish, today I used unicode with the same result

garro, I cannot promise you will be any wiser, but other Mac users have an extensive discussion about typing Thai with Mac on this forum, in this topic (which is also pinned on top of the Thai language forum front page).

I am a Windows user and clueless as to what you need to do. Anyways, good luck, hope it works out in the end! :o

Ok.

I typed that while the Safari window was set to Thai (Windows, DOS) encoding and using the Thai input source. But if when you or anyone else on a Mac reads it, it will you remain as symbols until you set the encoding in Safari to Thai. After Totsters comment I would expect the same to apply to 'typed on a Mac, read by Windows'

After reading through the links provided by Meadish, there does not appear to be an easy way around this.

The best way around it is for the people running the site to make sure all their pages are marked as being encoded as Thai, as then Safari will do the right thing.

I also saw the alien writing under Thaddeus' avatar, until I switched Safari's 'Text Encoding' to 'Thai (Windows/DOS)'. Now it says ปีศาจน้อย. Firefox also showed alien instead of Thai, until I switched 'Character Encoding' to 'Thai (TIS-620).

On Windows, I am guessing that different browsers handle it in different ways. I would expect that that 'lowest common denominator' of browsers Internet Explorer guesses, and guesses correctly - otherwise I think the people running the site may have done something about it.

It's a sad fact these days that most people who write websites only try it with Internet Explorer. If you're lucky, they'll run it through Firefox too - rarely will they try an OS other than Windows while testing though.

P.S. I could not get Safari to work with this post - so I posted using Firefox. Ho hum.
