The Star Rating System On Tv

toptuan

Recommended Posts

I notice in the subject listing pages of each forum, there is some sort of star rating system. It doesn't seem to correspond to the number of posts nor the number of views. I DO notice that every time I make a post, the stars shoot up to the maximum immediately! :o (Yeah, right.)

1) What is it based on?

and

2) Who creates the rating?

Later edit...

OK, just saw the "rating" drop-down box (duh!). Do the mods have any input on this, or is it just for the commoner? And what are the "raters" rating: interest? controversy? quality of posts? whether they agree with the content? all of the above? Just looking for a little more explanation....

Anyone can add their rating to the topic.

Up2U... however you want to rate it... on any basis.

I assumed the mods couldn't because it never lets me choose. The star rating block doesn't do anything for me when I click on it.

It does for me... :o

For example, I just gave this topic in Forum Support a 5 star rating.

Strange. If I hover my mouse cursor over the Options dropdown it turns into a hand, over the Star dropdown, no change and clicking anywhere on it doesn't do anything. Will try it in IE to see how it behaves.

Just tried it in IE, same thing - no response.

I can't change it in this topic for some reason, however, I can in others !

Me neither, nothing happens when I click on the drop down arrow. And lots of topics don't show the rating system at all. I just figured we weren't allowed.

Ask my missus... :D

This is what I see when I click on the drop down box on a topic in the news forum:

And this is what I see in an unrated topic in the Samui forum:

Nope, clicked on nearly every pixel in the star box and nothing shows up.

I was going to bring that up once as to whether only certain forums/topics get a star rating system.

Amazing eyesight too :o

Never tried this much before (except on peoples profiles :D )

I rated this topic 5 first, it then told me my rating and the total number of ratings. I then re-rated it as 1, it updated my rating and the total ratings remained the same........ nice to be able to change your mind, does the personal profile work the same way?

Interesting that you could re-rate it... I cannot... the drop down arrow doesn't do anything if I've already rated a topic.

I wonder if it's browser dependent... I'm running IE6.

Using Safari in Mac OS X

But, now that I have re-opened this thread, it won't let me change the topic rating, and it no longer displays the rating info.

A little forum question (not worth starting a new topic for, and it'll keep Toptuan's best thread so far going :o )

In Forum 47, when you position your mouse pointer over the topic title it shows when the topic was started, could that be done with titles when you 'View New Post' in the main forum?

You can only mouseover in the forums, not in the "View New posts" listings. I have no idea why though, maybe it's coming in a future version.

  • 2 weeks later...
it updates with my new rating each time I do it, but doesn't add to the number of rates.

I can only vote once..whether for topics or for members.

MOD privilege maybe? :o

Sort of related, but it seems to be an unanswered question in the asylum: Why is the "star fairy" on strike so often when you try to change member's profile ratings? I can only change ratings about 30% of the time. The rest of the time it looks as if it's doing something & goes back to the previous rating. I know I'm not the only one this has happened to. Am I doing something wrong?
