BANGKOK, 16 July 2018 (NNT) – The 2018 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Innovation Index moved Thailand up seven places from 51st last year to 44th out of 126 countries worldwide.

Thailand was also placed sixth for export of creative goods, eighth in terms of high technology exports and eleventh for patent registrations. WIPO and its partners also placed Thailand first out of 20 nations for innovation development potential.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha responded to the rankings by saying that his government has given importance to the basic infrastructure needed to foster innovation and high level technology and has worked to support, protect and commercially utilize intellectual property. He added that funding for research and development has been increased and state offices have been encouraged to work in an integrative manner with the private sector and educational organizations.

The PM stated he wants all Thais to learn to develop innovations and use science and technology in their daily lives. He said Thais must consider the needs of the market and develop products that respond to consumer demands. He pressed researchers to find innovations that benefit low income earners in a sustainable way, such as those that add value to agricultural goods.

Not sure in Thailand improved or other countries failed to improve.  Regardless, it is doubtful the current government had anything to do with any positive change.

Good news has many fathers, while bad news is an orphan.

Maybe he could give some concrete examples of how rankings improved due to his government? And get some independent experts to confirm? Guess not...

That's because nobody made illegal copies of his songs. The two that were on sale at one of the Sukhumvit vendors stalls, caught dust and were disposed in a blue trash can labelled general waste.

Although the education system is getting worse, and soon Thailand will be so far behind, it will be virtually impossible to recover without hiring internationaly

I just can't understand how the Generals snappy attire has also shot up the dress sense of the region. What snappy colours

It's WIPO, not the Thai government, that has made these calls. OK, so it would be nice to have some real-world examples - 'export of creative goods'? 'high tech exports'? 'patent registrations'?

You may be right for ought I know, but how do you know? on what measurements or measurable criteria?

You cant ask questions the Supreme Leader cannot answer.

He is doing everything he can to make sure Thailand is at the forefront of technology and soon students from other countries will flock here for the Top Tier Education they will get.... Its inevitable!

Nearby rankings:

35 Malaysia

42 Greece

43 Ukraine

44 Thailand

45 Vietnam

46 Russia

For each country Innovation Index there are seven sub indices that are rated and ranked (#). Among individual analysis are factors which may indicate weaknesses. For Thailand (page 328) I identified weaknesses are unsurprising:

  1. Institutions (65) - political stability & safety, cost of redundancy
  2. Human Capital & Research (57) - pupil-teacher ratio (secondary), tertiary inbound mobility
  3. Infrastructure (72) - environmental performance
  4. Market Sophistication (28) - microfinance gross loans, venture capital deals
  5. Business Sophistication (62) - knowledge-intensive employment, firms offering formal training, GERD financed by abroad, ICT services imports
  6. Knowledge & Technical Outputs (40) - ICT services exports
  7. Creative Outputs (50) - no weakness

Of the seven sub indices Institutions may have the most immediate impact on the country's immediate future.

LOL

I think he should try and improve the basic education system first You cant do all this fancy stuff if you cant read or write first. Thailand has a real problem at their schools 1/Underpaid Thai Teachers don't care2/ Thai students don't care3/ Thai parents don't care4/ and last but not least the gov don't care They are generating a race of university students with degrees that are worthless anywhere in the world except Thailand and them have no plan on how to fix it Should be interesting when Thailand is head chair for Asean next year and if this guy is still in power which I believe he will be what language he will use to speak at conference of ASEAN leaders Most Other leaders use English to address the conference Has anybody heard this guy speak English?
