The mother of a university student has filed a police complaint after he was beaten up at school on Wednesday evening and had to be hospitalised the next morning.

Prasopsuk Chiangchaowai, 37, told reporters that three third-year students at Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep beat up her son badly enough to cause internal injury.

She said teachers at the school were uncooperative when she demanded information about the attackers.

Pavarit Rangsit, 19, is in his second year at the university.

His mother said the older students who assaulted him claimed to be imposing discipline, saying Pavarit and other sophomores were not adequately controlling freshmen.

They hit him repeatedly in the stomach, the mother said.

She said her son was taken to Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital, where doctors found there was internal bleeding from a ruptured spleen and placed him on a respirator pending an operation.

After speaking to reporters, the mother filed a complaint with Thung Mahamek police.

Probe launched after student’s alleged ‘disciplinary’ beating at university

By Kornkamol Aksorndej

A probe has been launched after a student was allegedly badly beaten and suffered a ruptured spleen as part of a military-style “disciplinary” punishment by his seniors at Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep.

Pawarit Rangsit, 19, needed urgent surgery to remove his spleen on Thursday. As of press time, he remains on a respirator in the intensive care unit at Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital.

The punishments were issued on Wednesday.

According to Pawarit’s friends, three third-year students criticised them and Pawarit for failing to ensure that first-year students pay proper respect to seniors.

The third-year students then ordered them to receive punishments, which involved push-ups and a beating. They allege the seniors punched the stomach of the second-year students until Pawarit collapsed.

Pawarit’s aunt Rungroj Kwankomon, and his mother, Prasopsuk Chiangchaowai, lodged a complaint with police on Friday.

Thung Maha Mek Police Station’s deputy superintendent Pol Lt Colonel Narong Yimpan said investigators would interview Pawarit’s friends and contact the university to arrange the surrenders of the three suspects.

“If they do not surrender, we will issue a summons. If they do not respond to the summons, they will face arrest warrants,” he said.

The university’s president Sukit Nitinai said his institute had already looked into the case.

“Our probe is now ongoing,” he said. “The results should come out within 15 days.”

Sukit said: “The three suspects have not come to the university since the incident occurred on Wednesday but we have already contacted their parents.”

Sukit added that if senior students violated the rights of juniors, they would be suspended from study for one semester. “But if they have resorted to physical assaults, they will be fired,” he said.

Rungroj said her nephew came home on Wednesday night looking pale and complained of muscle pain.

“But he told me he played football and did a lot of exercise,” Rungroj said. “So, I just gave him painkiller and muscle relaxant.”

Pawarit has lived with his aunt since a young age as his mother works at a bank outside Bangkok.

At about 4am on Thursday, Pawarit knocked on the door of his aunt’s bedroom asking for help.

“He said he vomited and had bowel movements the whole night,” Rungroj said.

She rushed him to the Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital and informed her sister.

They then contacted the university to demand an explanation.

Charges need to be pressed and if convicted, they need to pay their dues. Why do the Thai police look the other way when things like this happen?

This is nothing more than a barbaric assault.   Condoned by Thai officialdom, but not by the average Thai, thankfully.

Any wonder the average Thai has no respect, in fact disdain, for the Thai police and the Thai judiciary?

It's about time that Thai stop accepting a wai as being OK for crimes like this and instead demand criminal charges be filed followed by civil proceedings for monetary damages.

These irresponsible school managers, and their ministerial supervisors ought to be locked up, for they know very well that hazing  goes on year after year, but just turn a blind eye. But  just like with the military conscripts, there is no respect for human life.

What's wrong with Thai police???

Why can't they go to the homes of the suspects and arrest them !!

And be punished by the law for causing GBH. Grievous bodily harm. Stop this business of young students kowtowing to their elders. Even in my son's military school it is practised. It is archaic and barbaric if out of control. I hope the boy recovers quickly.

And here's me thinking it was the job of the RTP to go after them.

Because that would involve physical movement, something avoidable if at all possible.

It's more complex than what we're used to. They have to find out if the perps are from wealthy, hiso connected families, or if their families have political or police connections. Then they have to check the victim's family's connections too. Then look at all angles to ensure they max any benefits to themselves whilst avoiding angering the wrong people in brokering an acceptable deal.

They only look the other way for a reason.

Remember when some known connected thugs, actress boyfriend, beat up a senior army officers son in Chiang Mai? Remember his dad kicking the police into action? Remember that case went no where, other than they shut the club where it happened, or said they would. Just faded away. The actress, her boyfriend and some of his cronies were enjoying drinking and eating near Bangkok in a well known expensive restaurant at a posh mall just a few days later. Not a care in the world.

Nothing more than criminal assault. This hazing BS needs to be consigned to history and their risible comment of "imposing discipline" is a joke. Who appointed these scumbags to dish out judgment and punishment for anything? What, just because they were older, what BS. They should be charged under criminal law and the teachers should have an obstruction charge leveled against them for being complicit/an accomplice to it all, whilst the university should pay compensation and all medical bills. This archaic rubbish needs rooting out and has no place in the 21st century anywhere, especially at a place of learning. I hold nothing but contempt for the very notion of these such things that belong in the dark ages.

It doesn't matter what the university's probe reveals, it should be in the hands of the police!  No doubt the president of the university is looking to save their reputation.  Disgraceful.

what can you say, the procedures are designed for the police to do as little as possible until absolutely necessary it would seem
