NONTHABURI, 21 July 2018 (NNT) – The Department of Health is encouraging the general public to help reduce the volume of electronic waste which might affect their health and the environment.

The Department of Health has issued a circular to provinces regarding the harms from electronic waste, which could affect a person's health through the inhaling, eating, and touching dangerous substance from the waste, posing harms to waste sorters and those residing close to sorting facilities.

The waste might cause contamination in soil, dust, air, water, and food. Persons working in sorting facilities may bring home contaminants in their clothes which could further affect people around them, while infants, children, and pregnant women have higher chance of receiving these contaminants.

Most electronic wastes contain dangerous substances such as lead that harms the nervous system, endocrine system, kidney, blood system, and brain development in children; mercury which harms the central nervous system and the spinal cord which affects the motor control of the body, speaking abilities, and senses such as hearing and vision; chorine in PVC plastic which harms the breathing system and the nose, as well as causing the degradation of tooth veneers; cadmium which can cause acute lung inflammation and kidney failure; bromine which can cause cancer and modification of heart muscle.

According to the Department of Health, local administrations are authorized to regulate their own hazardous waste controls where all people and businesses have to abide or face legal prosecution. The general public are required to dispose of dangerous waste only in areas provided by the municipality or other local administrations.

The general public were encouraged to help mitigate the issue of electronic waste my reusing or recycling electronic devices reaching their end of life, while Thailand is currently revamping regulations on electronic waste and its consequences, in compliance with the EU's regulations that calls for regulation from the source my imposing taxes with importers, domestic distributors, charging fees foe the establishment of the environmental fund and the treatment of electronic waste in shipment, and the establishment of a waste sorting facility.

Anyone have a list of locations for these "elusive" official waste disposal sites ?

Acoording to the Pollution Control Department there are, well, err, well, none.

This is their view on the current situation.

 22 permitted factories related to e-waste collecting and dismantling
(2010).
 No specific license for recycling e-waste.
 No formal recycling factory of e-waste in Thailand.
 No mechanical large-scale dismantling equipment.
 Only manual dismantling with simple tools is used.
 Most of e-wastes goes to informal sectors, i.e. waste pickers, waste
buyers, junk shops, waste-recyclers, and waste re-processors.

I prefer buying refurbished electronics, especially in Thailand, where you can get most anything fixed.  The prices are low and it is a healthy thing to do.

Sure, sure. This is a country where you throw used batteries into general waste. Good luck.
