What’s in Thailand’s New Mini-Submarine Project?

A development has once again put the spotlight on Bangkok’s decades-old aspirations in this domain.

By Prashanth Parameswaran

On July 17, reports began surfacing out of Thailand that the government was moving forward with the construction of mini-submarines. Though few specifics have been publicly disclosed thus far and the process is expected to take a number of years to really get off the ground, the development has nonetheless put the spotlight once again on Bangkok’s decades-old aspirations in this domain.

As I have noted previously in these pages, over the past few years, Thailand has made some notable advances in terms of realizing its decades-long aspiration to acquire submarines. The most headline-grabbing of these was the approval of a deal to purchase submarines from China, initially concluded back in 2015 (See: “When Will Thailand’s First China Submarine Arrive?”).

Earlier this month, Thailand’s submarine pursuit was in the headlines again, albeit on a separate front. Reports surfaced that the current Thai government under Prayut Chan-o-cha was moving forward with a new project to design a so-called “midget” or mini-submarine, which had been in the works since late last year.

They are jumping ahead a bit and forgotten about citizens. Buy garbage collection trucks first.  Submarines comes later.

I encourage someone to take a poll. Setup a person in front of the main super markets and ask the question.

Should the government buy more submarines or garbage collection trucks?

Collect all the signatures over 1 week and send results to all the news papers and the appropriate government offices.

This must be done by Thai nationals.

As it stands the government may not understand what community needs and just need some help in finding out.

Let's help the government do its best.

Maybe the plan is to use the Subs in the Gulf as Ocean Going Trash Trucks.

Just need to hook up a floating dumpster, and when you surface - hey presto ! you can collect all the floating crap in the Sea.

Thailand needs subs like a fat boy needs chocolate cake

Don't forget any project that involves vehicles, airplanes etc, puts money in the pockets of government officials. The cost will be estimated as 3 times over with the extra 66% going into pockets costing the tax payer..Needed or not this mini sub idea is a hot topic at this time.

Not so sure; before collecting garbage need to look for places to deposit. Many unused holes out there off coast.

It's becoming evident that the whole world thinks the ocean is just one big hole for dumping rubbish in.
