Well, might have predicted as much, seeing how children normally need a child's mask. But anyway, I'm only saying I would not have been brave enough to take that gamble. No comment on safety procedures, organization or cave rescue management. They got them all out alive.

I agree with you. They did a great job and it is one I am glad that I had nothing to do with as it is way outside my skill set.

I have not the faintest idea about diving and I wonder if they had anything like the mask they needed in Thailand at all. Perhaps right down the bottom of Thailand where they do a lot of diving or it may have had to be imported.

From what I read about it the decision to bring them out was at very short notice.

One thing I have found through riding a motorbike is that Asian and Western heads are differently shaped when it comes to helmets and I think that faces would give the same problem.

Did they spend a lot of time? There was not enough time.

There was a LOT of down time. Plus the most basic check would be to make sure the dive masks fit. You’re telling me with all this planning, they rushed in with masks they didn’t know would fit? It’s possible but highly unlikely.

I have followed this story, and if I understand what happened, they had maybe two days to train them and somebody at that time told that the kids were not ready to dive, and because of the rains coming, the day after they decided to rescue the kids without waiting  , they had no time

So two days of training and prep for diving. and the kid never wore a mask one time? Still seems very odd to me. Never once wearing or trying on a mask until the actual time of rescue.

Am I the only one that thinks this is odd?

Of all the videos that I have seen on this, I believe this one by Australian TV to be the most informative. IMHO.

Who needs a Holywood movie after this? ABC 4Corners is still one of the best TV shows on the planet...

While I don't know if the masks came from them, there are offshore drilling rigs around Thailand, so they have to have divers that use specialised gear.

The scenario went from leaving them for 3 months or something to getting them out asap, so there may not have been time to do all the things some are talking about.

several links about it ( google it ); one is here  https://news.sky.com/story/thailand-official-says-12-boys-trapped-in-cave-not-ready-to-dive-out-11428690

it's not me who says it, I am not a specialist

But would those rigs carry anything small enough for an 11 year old child?

I have no idea about any diving gear.

The days of having divers on offshore rigs are long past, ROV are now the order of the day, you would have thought with all the recreational diving in Thailand there would have been the right equipment available though.

Na-ah, this is 'fake news', made up by silly Farangs, the brave Thais did it all by themselves, the authorities said it, and they never lie!

As the fairly common ASEAN phrase goes ‘ Don’t Thai to me’

Totally different type of equipment.

They did not use normal scuba masks but rather a special type of full face mask. Not easy to find least of all in child size.

But it's what they haven't said and didn't say that says it all - it equates to saying "We did it all by ourselves".

I have no idea what you mean.

They repeatedly acknowledged and thanked the foreign cave divers.

well at least the British Government fully acknowledged the job well done by their guys as did the Australian Government with prestigious awards given to all who participated - to me seems there is something lacking from the country most helped.

I tend to agree with that.  A garland round the neck and a poxy visa is borderline rude!!

But lets not forget, these guys didn't do this for the adulation, quite the opposite, they risked their lives to save some kids and when all was done keep a very low profile till they flew out

And do you really think a Western country (US, AUS, UK)
would have done more!? I highly doubt it.
These guys got love, something money can't buy, they got gratitude, something money can't buy, they got certificates of appreciation, something money can't buy, and they got VIP residence Visas, which cost about 500,000 baht.
The frikken nay sayers here are like breeding vermin.

They got a certificate and a poxy visa thats worthless unless you actually want to live here.  You said it mate.

And btw, yes they did do more.  The Australian government awarded their guys the second highest civilian honor.  We'll wait to see what the British government does when next years honors list is announced.

Perhaps you don't agree with others opinions but because others opinions differ to yours doesn't make them "vermin"

And this is the person who had the audacity to call people trolls and now vermin - such class.

Yeah that's right, I'm audacious. And I certainly don't go around deciding what is and is not worthy of being recognized as a suitable honor. They saved 13 lives, there is no greater honor.

Could you please explain how referring to people as vermin makes you audacious.  Rude, yes of course, but audacious....i think not.
