What is their job then? Why do they scrutinise passports..just to look at all the nice stamps?People make mistakes it's called human error...that's why the IO should check expiry dates align with departure dates..OK?

"What is their job then?

To scrutinize passports to ensure that, amongst other things, the passport is legitimate and current.  An IOs job is not to point out that a passport will expire at some time in the future and neither is it an IOs job to ensure that, due to human failings, no passenger will make a mistake in the future, that's the passport holder's job!  OK?

So what was the outcome of this ? Are they still at the airport?

Did you even read the original article? They weren't even still at the airport when this thread was started. As stated in the linked article in the OP:

The family, from Corstorphine, have gone back to their property in the meantime in Ubon Ratchathani ...

A Thai citizen entering Thailand would have access to facilities to renew their passport before they leave Thailand again.

Was the son's Thai passport issued in London? normally the Thai passport office is very 'online' and only require the minimum of document, ID card ,which the boy doesn't seem to have, or original Birth Certificate. Was there an issue where the passport office doesn't accept UK birth certificate? Why do they have to involve the process of obtaining a Thai ID card in this case which of course will be complicated

Renewing the Thai passport seems much easier for my wife when in Thailand than renewing our British passports. Same with Thai ID really quiet simple?

why can’t he get emergency docs from the British consulate?

Within the past 2 months, he may have...  As usual, there was no followup on the headlines, the story no longer considered of interest or worth following up after the initial 'media hit'..

Firstly, you may want to hold fire on your unjustified personal attacks.

Secondly, it's not just my opinion, it is fact.

Why would any IO, anywhere, be required to take the time to scrutinize every travellers passport in order to point out to them that their currently 100% valid and unexpired document will expire at some stage in the future?  As every passport has an expiry date that would mean that IOs would be explaining it to every single traveler, every time they passed through Immigration/passport control, without exception.
