PHUKET: Police have arrested 19 people involved in a loan shark operation in Phuket in a series of raids that have seized 17 motorbikes, a car and B24,000 in cash.

According to a report by the Phuket Provincial Police, 17 of the suspects arrested face charges of providing loans that charge interest greater than allowed by law, with two more people arrested as accessories to the illegal loan scheme.

The report did not name any of the suspects or the shops or locations where the illegal loans were offered from, though one raid included a “Digital Shop” in Pa Khlok, where one suspect was taken into custody, and a home where many of the motorbikes were being held, at this stage on suspicious as collateral collected for outstanding loans.

Only the tip of the iceberg, 100 and 100's up and down the country charging the poor extortionate rates of interest

Yes. But there's no unemployment and happiness everywhere.

Just cleaning up the opposition to the rackets the cops are running.

The courts are not interested in loan sharks in my experience. In a case I had the guy admitting charging an excessive amount of interest (which was only half the actual rate even then) and the matter was entirely ignored by the court. Until these people are convicted the whole scam will continue. Its absurd!
