Retired airman and his wife win big lottery prize - but the shop claims fraud

A retired airman and his teacher wife were thrilled when they won second prize in the national lottery. Their three tickets were worth a handy 600,000 baht.

But their joy was short lived. When they went to the shop where they bought the tickets the vendor said that they had taken them illegally.

They have gone to police to make a claim for fraud.

Yesterday Phitsanuloke residents Therdsak Thongchot, 63, and his wife Charoenrat, 56, went to a temple to pay their respects to show their innocence before talking to reporters.

Therdsak said he bought the tickets from a lottery vendor near his home near the airport on July 24th. There were three winning tickets that were part of a bigger batch of 13 that he purchased from the vendor.

After they won 600,000 baht his wife went back to the store to see if they wanted to buy back the tickets for a discount - a common practice in Thailand that gives the vendor a chance to make some extra cash.

But the shop said that the tickets were part of a set of five and should not have been taken in the first place. They claimed fraud saying they had taken three tickets too many.

The couple sold the winning tickets to another vendor near the Phitsanuloke station for 591,000 baht.

After that the original vendor went to Charoenrat's school to ask what they were going to do about it. They have now filed a complaint with the local police alleging fraud.

Police told Thai Rath that the matter was under investigation and no other details were available as they were in the process of talking to both sides in the dispute.

So, the lottery vendor is a psychic. Because if the people who claim the win, had not been stealing these specific tickets. Then the vendor would have been buying exactly those 3 tickets.

That´s the only reason I can see with this hysterically idiotic claim.

Good that Thailand has no casino's, even a simple lottery gives them loads of problems.

They do have casinos, the ones near Thai borders are actually more for Thais. Always full, already in the morning. I've seen people I know losing hundreds of thousands in minutes. Then they complain about the horrible debts. These teachers.......?

You can't make such stuff up, can you? The monk must have decided that they are honest people. Amen. That doesn't sound like showing their innocence to me, exactly the opposite.

There's a modest tax applied when winning, even if claiming in person in bkk.  Claimants elsewhere can redeem tickets locally as per this example.

Oops, thank you. That makes sense then.

The tax is 1 %, so he would have had to pay 6000 baht in tax if he went down the Nonterburi lottery office.

Take buggeration factor into consideration Pit- lock,  Bangkok and back etc, 9000 baht commission to do it locally not such a bad deal

So the original seller knows the numbers of every ticket she sold in singles and twos and fives from memory or what????

"...from memory or what????"

Probably from "what".  And that would be that thing known as modern technology that ensures people don't have to rely on their memory for every important thing and risk being ridiculed on public forums for not making use of it.

Why on earth an electronic lotto hasn't been implemented is beyond me. It would instantly put an end to crap like this and overpriced tickets.

I agree. but it would be much more difficult to rig and cheat. I have always wondered how much is Catullus spent on lottery tickets. As an exmpl3 the Uk lottery wa 1 pound no now 2. Still people were winning minimal 3 million pound and often more. in Thailand you might win. Ouplenof million Baht if your lucky which is 46 thousand pound. Knowing Thais and how much thy spend on lottery tickets I would love to know where all the money goes. Anyone for a submarine. Lol
