Activist Veera given suspended jail term, ordered to do social

Political activist Veera Somkwamkid was today given a 16- month suspended jail term and ordered to do social work for one year after he was found guilty by the Criminal Court of defaming Pol Gen Srivara Rangsibrahmanakul, the national deputy police chief.

 

He was also fined one million baht plus interest thereon for the same offence.

 

Srivara lodged a complaint with the Crime Suppression Division accusing Veera of violating the technology crime law after he lodged a complaint with the national police chief, Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, accusing Srivara of illegally filling up and making a weir on a public water way in Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima.

This is utterly ridiculous, if I remember correctly the firms involved in the multi billion dollar corruption scandal in Klong Dan were recently fined around 6000 baht each for such heavy losses to the state, while this guy is fined 1 million for defaming a cop who appears to have some very dubious associations / loyalties.

Also factor in how many times acts of gross violence and recklessness on the roads and in the public space a fine of around 500 to 1000 baht is given. Another glaring example of why Thailand's legal system is an absolute abomination in its present state

Such as that senior copper who picks up 600,000 baht a year "consultancy fee" from a large beverage company.

pretty bad when telling the truth gets you a suspended jail time  and hit with a massive fine but I suppose they have to protect their own or they would all be jailed for all the illegal things these "leaders" do constantly. Unfortunately the truth in Thailand doesnt matter especially when the "rich" are the ones being shown up as the guilty party, the laws need to be re written to stop all the travesty we are seeing here
