Iran to unveil new fighter jet, develop missiles - minister

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will unveil a new fighter jet next week and continue developing missile capabilities as a top priority, the defence minister said on Saturday, defying new U.S. sanctions aimed at curbing Tehran's missile programme and regional influence.

 

Iran's navy also announced on Saturday that it has mounted a locally built advanced defensive weapons system on one of its warships for the first time, as tensions mount with the U.S. military in the Gulf.

 

U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States in May from a 2015 accord between Iran and world powers that curbed Tehran’s nuclear activity in exchange for sanctions relief.

 

Trump said the deal was deeply flawed as it had not curbed Iran’s ballistic missile programme or reined in its support for proxies in conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

 

Iran has dismissed any direct talks with Washington to resolve the issues raised by Trump.

 

"Our top priority has been development of our missile programme. We are in a good position in this field, but we need to develop it," Brigadier General Amir Hatami was quoted as saying by Fars news agency on Saturday.

 

"We will present a plane on National Defence Industry Day, and people will see it fly, and the equipment designed for it,” Hatami added. Iran celebrates National Defence Industry Day on Aug. 22.

 

"POSIBLE THREATS"

 

Iran unveiled in 2013 what it said was a new, domestically built fighter jet, called Qaher 313, but some experts expressed doubts about the viability of the aircraft at the time.

 

Iran’s functional air force has been limited to perhaps as few as a few dozen strike aircraft, either Russian or ageing U.S. models acquired before the 1979 Iranian revolution.

 

Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said on Saturday that "coastal and sea testing of the short range defence Kamand system were concluded successfully, and said this system was mounted ... on a warship and will be mounted on a second ship soon," the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

 

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said earlier this month it held war games in the Gulf aimed at "confronting possible threats" by enemies.

 

The U.S. military’s Central Command said it had seen increased Iranian naval activity, extending to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for oil shipments the Revolutionary Guards have threatened to block.

 

Iran has developed a large domestic arms industry in the face of international sanctions and embargoes that have barred it from importing many weapons.

The real idea behind the nuclear deal was to undermine the warlike mad mullahs: economic progress in exchange for backing away from nuclear weapons. Trump has put the militants back in charge with predictable results.

 

It would have been great to have a powerful ally in the area to balance Iraqi, Saudi, Israeli, Afghan and assorted nutters

It is a great misfortune for humanity that the Shah of Iran was not supported in its time.

Here lies the problem. The Shah of Iran was installed by the USA and the UK. Nothing but a puppet.  He was a murderous thieving thug who imprisoned and  murdered 10's of thousands of his own people. That is what led to the Iranian revolution of 79. That is why Iranians hate America. If only they had not interfered politically by installing the murderous dictator the wingnut Mullas would not control Iran now.

Hummm, mounting modified S-300 systems on ships?  A2/AD in the Straight of Hormuz.  Should be mildly interesting.  No more civilian airliners getting shot down perhaps.

I thought Iraqi , Saudi and Israeli were already allies, turns out you also want Afghan , which half way around the world on the other side

He was supported by his people until the Islam Mullahs took over in his absentee when he was getting chemo for his cancer..I got to shake his hand in 1976.

The last time the Iranians claimed to introduced a new fighter  it was found out to be a non flying mock up.

What a country doesn’t do is insufficient to hold it up for admiration.  Thank god it doesn’t have the means.  

So....   look at what it has done and what it threatens to do and let’s just throw in their claim that Israel has no right to exist.  Quite admirable.

Iran borders all these countries or effectively 

 

You Americans may wish to snuggle up with Saudi and Israel. I am rather more fussy.

 

Iraq will NEVER be an ally of America.

 

Afganistan will never be allies with anyone unless you count Pakistan. What do you mean by  "half way around the world on the other side"? Are you American?

 

I suggest you buy some atlases, history books and also read up on the "great game"

I was merely answering a question given the choice of the USA under Trump or Iran.

 

I live in Thailand with my Thai family.

Hah ?  The Shah was very much supported by the West. Most of all by the US and GB.

To mention the Shah and humanity in one sentence is so wrong. You never heard of his unfamous secret police force, the SAVAK ?

He replaced the democratically elected President Mossadegh. (Google: Operation Ajax, CIA, MI6)

Without that coup the mullahs wouldn't be the rulers of Iran today. Bad luck for Iran to be in the possession of oil.
