Yes, it's a real downside for them that they don't have to slave for 20,000 baht a month for equally obese and sweaty old foreigners in Thailand.

 

And just to clarify, Canada is not my birth country. Like many, I immigrated there from crap country, moved to a first world country then I started wondering why I would move to another third world country.

 

As a typical Westerner growing up in a "nanny state" many of you don't know how good you have it. After all it's the "nanny state" that enabled you to live a somewhat luxurious life in Thailand while taking advantage of high (for now) exchange rates and low cost of living (again - for now).

You buy the condo today, you've been sold on the great view, maybe even one of the serene sail boats on the lake (frozen shoreline for half the year). A year after purchase, big noisy machines arrive to start a new building, earth is broken on this postage-size space, you don't look forward to enduring years of noise and construction dust. A new condo building springs up, but damn it, that view is gone; you now have a view of all that glass but no sail boats.

Enjoy your tiny box in the sky.

"Nanny state" is correct, a license for this, a permit for that, and taxes being applied to both "this and that".

But I do agree, nanny state afforded many of us the opportunity to escape to that tropical paradise known as LOS. No more nanny state for me, where soon you'll get arrested for passing gas in public.

compared to Thailand my "Vaterland" Germany is a high security prison where you pay an arm and a leg of taxes if you opt to be a prisoner. i lived and worked in half a dozen countries but in none of them i enjoyed the freedom i enjoy here in Thailand.

Are you sure you are not mixing up Thailand with Canada here?

 

You know... in Canada there are actual zoning laws. If you buy a condo that may block your view in the future it's your own fault as it's pretty much well known in advance where developers will be "developing".

 

And seriously.... a view in Thailand? Of what? You can purchase... is it Icon Siam for 20 million dollars and have a view of one of the dirtiest most polluted rivers in the universe.

 

And speaking of "tiny" boxes in Toronto, I haven't seen one that comes "standard" at 21sqm.

What kills the USA for me is the politics. I cant stand the screeching, sore losering, PC attitudes, etc. PLus the fact that its boring....

 

Yes boring...Bangkok is very unboring for a 60 ish guy who has had his fill of working ,driving, hunting, fishing, rock concerts, bars, clubs and fast food. Plus I dont like to cook anymore. Plus I like cheap fruit

 

So lets see..Sunday? OK, grab a 100B  ($3) breakfast and my camera. Walk to Skytrain. For $1, go to....hmmm......ok lets just schmooze...Chatuchak! Take pics of stuff. Have a lunch for say 200B ($6)...or a snack! Jump back on train for another $1 head over to.....hmmm I know, its time to wierdo watch! Beer at  Hillary!  Ill drop $5 here! Then a dinner...maybe walk (yes...walk) somewhere and eat dinner for maybe $5! Take pics of food. Jump on BTS, go home, read newspapers about blizzards, snooze, repeat. Hey I just filled my day....for about $20. I could burn that in gas in the USA....

 

Sometimes I take a ride on the river up to Nonthaburi, feed the catfish. 

 

Hell, it sometimes takes me all day just to do my shopping. Vegetables are so much fun! Or...fish market! 

 

I still have hundreds of temples to do. I can have a sweet young thing anytime I want...hell I grab them out of the fish market sometimes...after all, I have AC AND a pool.. But if that was important to me, I'd stay in the States where I have a gf who is an Instagram Model and is 40 years younger than me. 

 

If im feeling lazy, i can stay home, work on my pics n stuff and watch news about blizzards somewhere. Or sit at my local bar, sip a Chang, and watch the the world go by. Or the pool. Because I tip the maids and guards, maybe they will run across the street and get me some lunch......

 

I love Germany btw...but who the <deleted> wants to retire there?

 

I'm an American. Im privileged to live in the greatest country ever. But for me, Thailand is just fine. Especially when you are older. Im free to do whatever I want in either place, thats the key

Good for you! Two years ago today, I finally moved back to the states after 3 years of retirement in Bangkok. Best move I ever made! I have complete medical care with Medicare and a supplement. I still visit 2-3 times a year as a tourist. After a couple weeks in BKK I am ready to leave. I am a much happier person visiting as a tourist than as an expat.

Just a guess but a while back you had a fall and this scared you and prompted the health concerns. Big scar on head. Since then you have totally changed your tune. Prior to that life appeared good for you and you made damn sure everyone knew it. Ukrainian to Canadian to Thailand farang (interest in astrology) with very supportive wife and you were coining it in with some job too. But the last 4 months your view changed and your main reason for deserting appears to be health.

- Avoid the winter-months in Europe/Canada and spend your winters in Thailand. As soon as Thailand turns into a Finnish-Sauna, head back and enjoy a nice spring, summer and fall in Europe/Canada. Next year: Rinse and repeat!

Easy to do, unless a guy has sold his house (including kitchen sink) back home and now having to fear that someone may have stolen his kitchen sink in Thailand during his absence.

The video in post # 80 is very true. I am a Canadian and have been spending 6 months in Thailand and 6 months in Canada for many years but am now starting to consider staying in Thailand permanently. I love Canada but since Jihad Justine Trudope was elected he is finishing what Pierre Trudeau started, destroying Canada. He is giving away Billions of dollars to countries that want to kill us, welcoming illegal economic refugee border crossers with open arms giving them free housing, medical, money and destroying anything that points out our past. All he has done since elected is dance in every gay pride parade, openly invite refugees into Canada for the free benifets while denying any increase in benifets to veterans or seniors that built this country and trying to turn Canada into another Muslim caliphate and impliment Sharia law which is funny because they throw people of his persuasion off rooftops. If one of our neglected vets don't take him out or he gets re-elected then as I love Canada sad to say I think I will have to stay in Thailand as I don't wish to live in Canastan

I'd love to split my time evenly between here and Thailand but I just don't have the finances to allow that.

 

It's great that you are happy in Canada and don't miss Thailand.  I felt exactly the same.  But my feelings did change somewhat over time.....so be prepared because that might happen to you too.

Exchange-Rates and Inflation with emphasis on "for now". Exchange-Rates are transparent, but officially published Inflation-Rates are a joke.
- Those 2 factors may throw a "monkey-wrench" into some well calculated Retirement-Plans.

I don't know what has driven the OP back to Canada. But I have a general idea what drives Farangs to Thailand. I am not going to lose sleep over it.

I tend to assume the latter. Thais have no antenna for sarcasm at all. Living among Thai's for an extended period of time may well stifle the capability of Farangs to differentiate between a sarcastic comment and a Bank-Statement.

No wonder, I like the company of Tourist better than long-term Farang residents. The latter display a strange aura of somberness, not unlike pigs awaiting their final destiny in a corral in front of a slaughterhouse.

Much to my regret, haven't found a Emoji that indicates "sarcasm". So this will have to do?

There are almost 200 Countries on this globe. Most of them are not "Democracies".  Travel around in "Non-Democratic" countries and see how you like it. Upon return, you will likely kiss the ground of any country within the EU, as soon as you disembark from the airplane.

I guess thats what you have to ask. 

 

I do not Care if satelite tv or wine is more expensive in Thailand than home, for me it is the possibillity to live healthy and have a good life that matters.
