CityNews – The Prime Minister has raised a question regarding the ‘Scar of Doi Suthep’.

A few days after the rally against the Scar of Doi Suthep which was held on August 26th, the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha addressed the media concerning the issue saying ‘if it was opposed before the construction began, the issue would not have been stretched this long neither would it have turned out to be a default budget for the government’.

Its a good point. The building work went on for years, clearing the forest, a big ugly patch of dirt, construction work, it could be seen from Maejo. I thought it was strange that until the point it was completed nobody seemed to be outraged.

+1!  Saw it long time ago on mtb rides.

Maybe PM should be reminded that building started when present government took the thrown and gatherings of more than five people were illegal, as they actually still are. But he will never hear my point, but maybe some members here on TV will. Sad times indeed.

And people eating sandwiches were arrested on daily bases.

The Thai public are apathetic and lazy.....but as soon as someone breaks the ice and questions something untoward, only then will they get on board hoping for some reward.

The PM first emerged as a "fence sitter" on this issue when he stated many months ago those objecting to this judicial land development and seeking it's removal should "follow the law".

Now he has clearly come out on the side of the judges by questioning the rationale and motives of the protesters.

He is not going to risk upsetting the judiciary with an election looming. He may well need their support on any issues of electoral illegality on the part of the junta.

When were the public hearings advertised and community input solicited, and environmental impact reports released and published for public discourse?  The PM would probably find his answer right there.  ?

Recall that it was the military that originally declared that it reviewed the proposed development by the Appeals Court before the grant of the land to the courts and concluded that there was no environmental issues. At that point who is going to challenge the military and the courts? Then beginning in May 2014 and through June 2018 where was the military government and the courts to reconsider following the environmental laws to assure proper legal compliance?

From the earliest beginning of the Doi Suthep development, the rule of law was not even an inconvenience. It has been the cumulative disappointment and dissatisfaction with the military junta with regard to harsh suppression of Thais rights and liberties that has given the public courage to openly resist and protest the project.

Better late than never.

Prayut's reaction is just deflection to blame the public rather than admit to the military's inherent permanent power over the Thai people's sovereignty.

And maybe you should be reminded that it was originally planned and approved by a previous government, one run by a certain family clan that has it’s stronghold in Chiang Mai. Nobody was apparently brave enough to stand up to them at the time ? Or just did not want to bite the hand that fed them ?

maybe the public was not that well informed about the earlier actions of assigning the land and approving a budget for the houses etc.

DING.?

Next question.

To know something is being built versus knowing what is being built is two different things. How well was the intention of using these building as judicial homes publicized? Of course there is a history for treating the public like mushrooms anyway. Keeping them in the dark and covering them with crap...which would keep them from being able from knowing to voice their concerns.
