Underage Muslim girls are regularly forced into marriage with Malaysian men, and the government turns a blind eye

 

One day this summer, 11-year-old Ayu married 41-year-old Che Abdul Karim Che Hamid at a small pink mosque on the banks of the Golok river in the far south of Thailand. Earlier that morning, Che Abdul Karim and his soon-to-be child bride had travelled over the border from Malaysia into the Thai province of Narathiwat for the wedding. After a short ceremony at 11am and a trip to the Islamic Council offices to get their marriage certificate stamped, the couple crossed back over the border. Ayu, was now Che Abdul Karim’s third wife.

 

In Malaysia, where men can legally marry girls under 18 if they get Islamic sharia court approval, Ayu’s case caused a national outcry in parliament and protests on the streets. But over the border in Thailand, where the controversial union took place, the response by the government and religious authorities has been notably muted.

That´s what they do to many things, as long as nobody make it obvious in social media. Then we have to talk about it for at least 24 hours, before we forget it again.

I don't care to denigrate any religion. What is important is informed consent for marriage, legal age of consent and legal marriage age. No religious forum should be able to override the law of the land that should be enforced by the authorities. No blind eyes turned thank you. And letting, taking or forcing someone too young to cross a border and be exposed to the above risks should be a crime.

Come on guys we need to support all the 7th century belief systems so they can abuse the young boys and girls while acting like there is nothing wrong with their messed up religion.. Otherwise we will be considered Nazi Islamophobic a-holes or something...

Having lived in Pakistan and studied the Islamic sharia world while there i agree that there are many problems which to us seem bad.

 

child brides are probably the worst.  The challenge that counties  like Thailand have as well as  the western world is how to police and enforce it. I am sure it happens in Canada to some extent.  The challenge is that if it is kept quiet by those involved it is almost impossible to police.yntil the ou can make rules until the cows come home BUT itwill still be done.  Remember these are not marriages registered with any government they do not register it at the amphur or licence bureau.  These are only recognized by the sharia courts.

The government of a certain "not named country" chooses to "turn a blind eye" and ignore that this happens because the investigation might just turn up reports of the underage "private" prostitute villas that many of the more so called elite and area officials visit often.

some might think the sharia style adult males marrying children are doing a better job since they apparently support the girl and family while the catholic priests simply had sex (raped) young boys and did nothing to help their families financially.  this is not to be perceived that i condone either.

Good article. My colleagues read/watch Thai media and confirm this has never been reported, nor debated in parliament.

 

Forced marriage (third wife or more) in order to cover up underage rape and pregnancy. Religion of peace.

Nothing will be done by Western governments eager to appease muslim migrants just as with the muslim men who have four wives, even tho bigamy is illegal. In Australia they treat 3 of the "wives" as single mothers, give each one a government pension and a place to live in, courtesy of the tax payer.

In New Hampshire, girls aged as young as 13 are still allowed to marry until 1st January 2019! 32 US jurisdictions allow girls to marry as young as 14 depending on the jurisdiction.

Not true... I have hundreds of Muslim friends and friends from all religions plus atheists. Only a small percentage of people love to hate and it has no place here.

Well that is not a proven fact, something that has just been passed down, but obviously his example was not followed by many Arab men since then due to their known proclivity to young boys. That said of course then the middle ages Muslims were just copying the example of their hated foe,  the Catholics and their untouchable priests and pope.

There's  no historical records that support this. It's all speculation and many religious scholars think Aisha's age was closer to 15 or 16.
