Rising Thai star Sunny Akani Songsermsawad beat former champion Stephen Maguire of Scotland in the last sixteen of the world six red snooker championships at the Bangkok Convention Centre earlier today.

It went to the final frame with 22 year old Sunny winning 6-5 after Maguire ran out of position. The Scot threw in the towel - literally - as the large Thai crowd cheered the popular young star.

He will meet amateur Mohammed Shehab who sensationally beat last year's six red champ and reigning snooker world champion Mark Williams of Wales. The score was 6-3 to the journeyman from the UAE.

Also in tonight's quarter finals starting at 6.30pm at Central Lat Prao is 47 year old Thai veteran James Wattana or Tong. He meets Chinese number one and world number six Ding Junhui in the best of 11 encounter.

Tickets at 200 baht are available on the door. All four quarter finals are being played at the same time.

A happy Sunny after his victory at the Bangkok Convention Centre last night.

Thailand's Akani Songsermsawad or Sunny held his nerve in a tense final frame of the day late last night to enter today's semi-finals of the Saeng Som World Six Red Snooker Championships at the Bangkok Convention Center.

Sunny, 23 next Monday, just managed to outlast surprise package Mohammed Shehab of the UAE by six frames to five.

Sunny is congratulated by Thai snooker fans after his victory last night.

Sunny will meet England's much improved Kyren Wilson at the BBC at Central Lat Prao this evening (Friday) starting at 6.30pm.

Earlier Thai veteran and former world number three James Wattana or Tong, 47, was well beaten by China's best player and world number six Ding Junhui.

Ding will meet Belgium's Luca Brecel in the other semi-final at 3pm.

The semi-finals are the best of 13 frames. Saturday's final that begins at 3pm is the best of 15. The winner will receive 3.5 million baht.

The tournament has just six reds on the table compared to the usual 15 so games tend to be quicker and more unpredictable.

Tickets are priced at 200 baht for the semi-finals and 300 baht for the final.
