According to Josep Borrell, the US president brushed off the scepticism of Spanish diplomats – who pointed out that the Sahara stretched for 3,000 miles – saying: “The Sahara border can’t be bigger than our border with Mexico.” Trump wooed voters in the 2016 election with his promise to build a “big, beautiful wall” across the US/Mexico border, which is roughly 2,000 miles long. Even if there was an impractical wall built (wiki says it's 4,800km) I'm sure it wouldn't last long. When I went across the Sahara more than thirty years ago, the route we took was marked every kilometre or so by strobe lamps on tall metal poles. They were supposed to work at night, the batteries buried at the base of the pole were charged by a solar panel located on the top of the pole. None of them worked though, as the 'locals' realised very quickly they could dig up the batteries and sell them. They would probably dismantle the wall too and sell pieces of it for scrap.
