Ex-Democrat MP for Chon Buri quits party

A former MP of the Democrat Party representing the eastern province of Chon Buri has tendered his resignation from the party in what is seen as the start of a wave of defections from the country’s oldest political party.

An informed source in the party said Soravuth Nuengchamnong assigned a representative to submit his resignation letter to the director of the Democrat party this afternoon. A number of other former MPs of the Democrat in some of the eastern provinces are reportedly planning to follow suit.

In the letter, Soravuth thanked the party for its support throughout the years he was with it but gave no indication which party he would join.  However, it was speculated that he would join the Palang Pracharath, a newly-formed political which has openly declared support for  Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to return to power after the election.

Time is drawing near for Abhisit to declare for Prayut as a pro-military party or he will become a marginalized candidate with the political power of a pawn. Perhaps it's time for him to be bold and consider a coalition with PTP.

This news will shake up Ahbisit. Chonburi has been Dem stronghold and has 8 seats. 7 seats held by Dem while 1 by PTP. Even this 1 seat was a former Dem who switch to PTP. Soravuth is an incumbent MP and news of others following him to defect to PPP is bad news for Ahbisit. Looks like the party will be decimated in the next election by defections, ACT grabbing seats in Surat and Nakorn Si-thammarat and losing seats to FFP and possible PTP. Looks like the junta is targeting the Dem at its most vulnerable stage to gain enough seats to create a Parliament impasse and allow the senate house to be the kingmaker.
