A group of tourists in Chumphon have been slammed on social media after they posted a video on YouTube of them riding on the back of a whale shark.

The video has since been deleted and an apology has been issued as the head of a national marine mark has criticized the behavior.

Pakanut Tawisakulrat said that their group had gone on jetskis on a diving trip in the area of Koh Ngam Noi and Koh Ngam Yai in the Chumphon marine national park.

They were about 7 nautical miles from shore.

Reports suggested there were up to 8 people in the group.

By chance they had seen a whale shark and in their delight had forgotten themselves, said Pakanut.

Their behavior was not right and they would like to apologize.

Park chief Rakpong Bunyoi said that vessels should keep a distance of at least 20 meters from such creatures and people should keep a distance of three or four meters in the water.

They should not be touched at all let alone ridden on.
