Has Samui Gone To The "dogs"?

Recommended Posts

Are you driving in a car or a motorbike? I guess you would feel safer in a car.

My advise to anyone on Samui. Rent a house rather than buy. If some Jerk turns up next door or some one makes a Kareoke bar or something it is much easier to move than if you have to sell. The island is changing too fast.

My advice to anyone visiting Samui is unless you are a highly experienced motorbike rider rent a jeep. If you feel you must rent a bike please wear a crash helmet it may not look cool but it may just save your life.

Excellent advice regardless of where you live in Thailand, southwest.

THe issue is not wether to move or stay...it is the disgusting fate that befalls all the "beauty-spots" in Thailand, we/they are eating their own heritage. Amongst the main attractions in Thailand are its famous beaches and islands, these are getting despoilt at an alarming rate, it is a social, financial and ecological outrage.

What appalls me is the way that EVERYWHERE in Thailand that has any kind of natural beauty is swiftly spoilt by developers....is nowhere sacred? Samui is only a few years (or even moths) away from becoming a concrete lump in the sea...meanwhile people are off looking for somewhere else to "rape".

You being one? :o Since it says you live in Chonburi, but you're right on about the developers, going gung ho on Samui!...Developers, :D lets give it a rest!

I'm sorry I can't understand your post........."you being one?" - a what?

should read MONTHS not MOTHS BTW!

Coundn't agree more! But few ppl think like that, unfortantly. It's time do get ppl to to hear and do something about it. What about the kids born today? Will they ever see Samui like it is today? NO.

im with you Jens.

Time for a sing a long folks.

And a-one.... a-two..... a-one two three four..... 'Onward keyboard soldiers, marching on as one!!! Dah dah dah dah daadeedaaa, dum doo dee dee dee!!!!'

Time for a Churchilian like war cry if you ask me. We could all club together and hire a little space outside Tesco Lotus for the day. Podium and all. Raleigh the troops and fight the evil forces who are bringing chaos and tragedy to this lovely little island.

WE WILL FIGHT THEM ON THE BEACHES!!!

"Talk me through the areas of Samui that remain charming, peaceful, quiet with plenty of authentic Thai charm. Go on. Name a few. You probably cant, as you don't know of them. You don't know of them, because you have never been there."

largely because they're getting rarer and rarer and harder to find..........

lamai and Chaweng had the best beaches....now look at the state of them....don't try and tell me someone is "preserving" a beach on Samui ?????

Spot on wilko.. :D

BTW CupOtea or what ever your name is, of course i've been there..!! Many times when it truly was "charming, peaceful, quiet with plenty of authentic Thai charm" Sadly, that was many years ago before the cash registers & big business moved in and spoilt the darn place. Out of curiosity i flew down their again last year for a weeks break from the idyllic north... :o Sorry to have to spoil your illusion, but in reply to the actual title of this thread.. YES ! Samui has gone to the 'dogs'

Its only a paradise isle to those who don't know any better..

A smart-arse socialist :D

Been there a couple of times, will come back. I was forced to remain in Sweden this winter by the bloody social welfare people, as I wanted to retire after 50 years of diabetes and they are taking the chance to harass me to death. Anyway - one thing I miss a lot on Samui is a good old honest big cheap BUS circulating the island! It would substitute for many smaller vehicles that are now making the roads dangerous and the only one hating them had been those taxi drivers taking - what was it, 300 or 600B for driving a few meters?

I couldn't agree more.

90 percent of all thai beaches have gone to the dogs

All those who say its progress are talking sh*te.

If the very things that have bought people here in the first place have been destroyed

then this cannot be progress.

ie tropical seclusion and tranquility

ability to swim in crtystal clear clean waters

ability to escape the madding crowds and commercilaisation of cities

as opposed to the sewage infested murky seas we have now and all the trafiic

and pollution with chaweng appearing like a mini bangkok

if you want tescos and hospitals then why not live in a city

There is loads out there on the net but samui has indeed been raped by greedy criminals in the main. Its well known that the island is run my mafioso families and many thais won't go there.

It is also thr home of many foreign criminals as well.

Locals have not gained but been forced out due to high prices etc.

Progess would mean that the locals standard of living had improved

it hasn't

progress would be a waste water treaetment plant to prevent the sea you want to swim in

becoming an ecoli open septic tank. There is no waste water treatment plant anywhere.

It has progressed from an idyllic hideaway into a torrid, polluted mess that is now package tour city meaning the only people to have gained are sad expats, and local and foreign mafia types

. Shame on anyone who think this is a good thing.

obviously all the people here who think samui has progressed are one the expats profitting from the huge tourist influx.

Strange how its usually expats who ruin these places by letting their greed ruin the very thing they first fell in love with about the place

You are so right on, yabs, and am glad to read one of few straight forward posts on this subject. Some (expates living on the tourist, etc.) are truely some of the worst destroyers of a once beautiful Isand. When I first saw Tesco, christ, I knew that was the beginning of the end, but yab, you have said it all. I don't go in the ocean on Samui, since ppl I know that have have gotten skin problems, etc.

Thanks again for you outlook on the waste problems!!

Y'know, things change - and not always for the better. One reason I want to move from Tallinn after over ten years is that it isn't the same charming hidden little secret it was in the '90s. Used to be you couldn't get tourists to come to this - as 1st described to me in 1994 - "dirty, grey Soviet city, there is nothing to do there so get in and out as fast as you can". Now massive cruise ships drop off thousands every day in the summer - in addition to the flood year around from the UK. With so many tourists comes higher prices (forcing out locals), more new construction, and traffic jams. Sounds a lot like how some of you are describing Samui. But the newbies who come still think it's great because they don't know how it used to be. I'm counting on that newbie feeling when I get to Samui next fall. Besides, no matter how "bad" it gets there, at least you don't have to worry about -13C with an arctic wind.

Oh, Samui, you will like. it for a year or so, as long as you don't go in the ocean. With progress comes waste management, or doesn't that bother you?

Well said Yabs. That is the most inteligent post on this subject yet. Sorry everyone if your idea of paradise is getting pissed every night in a bar then taking the bar lady home every night to satisfy your manly needs. Then waking up at mid day and throwing yourselves in the poluted sea. Only to go through the whole process again. This Island is totaly mucked up.

If you want a lovely beach, get the ferry to Donsak turn left and drive for about 20 minutes. Kanom , beautiful.
