S Korean fleeced by Chiang Mai bar gets a refund

A karaoke bar in Chiang Mai province on Friday refunded a South Korean customer Bt120,000 after having billed him Bt160,000 for a few hours of service on Tuesday.

 

Jeong Geunbok, 46, agreed to withdraw his police complaint against the Forever karaoke bar after its manager Chaiwat Songchaiwan, 35, showed up at police station and returned the money.

 

Friday’s negotiations at the police station were the second after Jeong filed the complaint on Thursday, accusing the bar of overcharging him.

 

The first negotiation resulted in the bar operator refunding the Korean Bt60,000. However the Korean was not happy with the refund so he sought police help to set up a second meeting.

 

Chaiwat then returned another Bt60,000.

 

Pol Lt-Colonel Pornpichit Rungrueng, the deputy Chiang Mai police chief, said although the case between Jeong and Chaiwat had been settled police would fine Chaiwat for operating an entertainment venue without a permit.

 

The Korean told police that a tuk-tuk took him to the bar on Charoenprathet Road on Tuesday night. He was greeted by many girls who ordered several rounds of drinks.

 

He drank heavily and continued to drink until the bar closed. He said he was shocked when he was billed a total of Bt160,000.

 

He did not have enough money so a waiter forced him to pay with his credit card.

 

On learning about the incident, his Thai friends suggested he contact the South Korean Embassy in Bangkok and alert police.

 

It has been reported that some karaoke bars in Chiang Mai have hired tuk-tuk drivers to deliver foreigners to the venues, with the bars then overcharging them. When customers complain to police about being cheated, the bars reportedly return the money.

 

Jeoung’s complaint resulted in police raiding the Valentine karaoke bar on the same road. When police arrived, the venue appeared to be closed but police found operations continuing from the back.

 

Police took Thanaporn Thaweelarp, 43, the manager and some waiters working at the time of the raid for further questioning to the police station.

 

On checking the documents, police found that though the bar had a licence to sell alcohol, it did not have a permit to operate an entertainment venue.

Disgraceful, the entire sum should have been refunded. The police should not negotiate with illegally operating business but compel them to settle a full refund and compensation for cheating and causing great inconvenience not to.mention the damage caused to the image of Chiang Mai

I think for us who can live without the daily need for deep “What your name, Hansum man?” conversations with bargirls, CM is actually a great place.

Probably because of the traffic being miniscule compared to Bkk and the fact that it's got everything that city has. Its cheaper to live, rent, eat, drink. Oh and not every foreigner goes to Karaoke holes in CM nor even drinks on Loy Khro road even though it's there if you want it. Friendly people the right places dont Rio you off. Another thing the climates better we're just heading into our coveted winter season its probably 20c outside now, some cloud no rain. So my question is if you avoid such holes as posted why would you live anywhere else in Thailand?

If you use this as a reason not to live in CM, and apply it equally, then there is no city in Thailand where you can live.  This kind of thing happens all over Thailand, and is rampant in the bigger tourist cities.  

I've been happily married and living here for 10 years, and know quite a few others who have been here longer than me.  And, overwhelmingly, none of us can think of any other city in Thailand where we would rather live.

The lack of understanding, and empathy, shown here for the police, and the staff of the karaoke bar ... for their trauma, humiliation, etc., which will undoubtedly require medical and/or psychiatric services in future ... is: appalling.

 

40,000 baht for services un-rendered is a pittance compared to the probable negative effects on these gracious entertainment providers, and the valiant police.

I would probably be able to guess where in cnx  the bar is.anyone who knows Thailand or visit Thailand knows to avoid these kinds of bars.it happens often they will not be the last

I am sure the karaoke Bar owner serves the local authorities very well with tea- and coffee-money.

As for CM immigration I've been on a retirement for 10 years and I can categorically state no problem ever!!! I've never been asked for anything other than the correct documents and the correct fee. My experience confirms if you are intelligent with immigration provide the correct paperwork they are no problem... Anywhere. Or maybe my intelligent friends and I are just lucky ????

I must be one of your intelligent friends, as in my 10 years here on a Retirement Visa, I've never had a single problem with CM Immigration.  I've always found them to be friendly and helpful.
