Thailand is too noisy - and the Thais themselves are fed up with it!

Surveys have shown that one of the biggest problems in Thailand is noise pollution.

While many foreign tourists and expats think Thais just grin and bear it, the opposite is in fact true.

In terms of being an annoyance factor noise is the number one source of complaints throughout the country

A New TV story on the subject quoted a university professor as saying that nearly a third of all complaints to the authorities like the police and district authorities are about noise.

Dr Sitthidech Pongkitworasing who heads an organisation looking into the problems of the people said that noise pollution was a big issue in Thailand. It accounts for 32.8% of complaints nationwide, he said.

Information from the Thailand Research Fund showed where much of the aggravation comes from.

They listed:

People who are drunk
Noisy road racers
Arguments
Festivals and parties
Restaurants
Factories
Vehicle repair shops
Soi dogs and feral cats and
Construction.

These were the main culprits but there are many more.

So what could people do about it?

Advice from the Research Fund is to record when, where and how often noise occurs.

Then report it by calling 191, using the police app "Police i lert u" or contacting the local station.

If that doesn't work try contacting the district office.

In Bangkok you can call 1555 or try www.bangkok.go.th/rongtook

"Rong took" means to complain about problems you might be facing.

Same for me, all I can hear is a few birds tweeting, and the fan spinning.

Same here, apart from the occasional thunderstorm.

I always thought that most Thais hate noise as much as foreigners.

I find noise pollution is Thailand is paltry compared with Vietnam.

Thai people accept noise as they know how there fellow country folk are if you complain - noise being preferable to injury or termination.

I have long felt sorry for a lot of the population who have to tolerate noise, small once quiet villages now have noisy trucks blasting through 24/7, they have to tolerate the noise but it has too effect them in a negative way, the quality of rest they get being "disturbed" at best.

Add the %¤#%¤& birds to that list. There should be a bounty on the koels heads. Same with the frigging frogs. Murder I say.

My own pet hates regarding noise here.

Those damn advertising pickups.

Speaker clusters on long poles.

Music bass coming from a mile away.

Motorbikes that don't appear to have a silencer.

People who shout in hotel corridors after 10pm.

People who shout.

Those godawful whistle people.

Those 1 kiloton fireworks that randomly go off in the afternoon.

Exploding electricity junction boxes.

People learning to play guitar, or much worse, the ukulele.

People.

No animal noise here has ever bothered me, and I have a loft full of nesting squirrels, and probably 50 tukgaers, [large lizards that hunt at night.]

more and more scooters in Pattaya are removing any effective exhaust, it is loud and annoying if you live near a main road, 24hrs a day the noise is prolific, they think it is cool and it definitely isn't and there are more and more of them by the day, I'd say that it is now 1 in 10 scooters that pass by my apartment have no effective exhaust, it has forced me to now close all my windows the noise is so bad especially at night.

I myself ride a large Motorbike and it is no were near the db levels of these scooters and it gets tested every year and is well within the limits, completely different - fuller and deeper sound of a typical large displacement Motorbike

Just yesterday i was sitting on my porch eating breakfast and told my S.O. that as long as i have this peace and quiet I will not complain.  I thought i was unique but see at least a few other posters have found their

peaceful habitat as well.  Give me birds and frogs over dogs and chickens any day !!   Not to mention bipedal primates .......................

In fact a relative of my wife has mentioned that about her neighbours. But  I doubt she will ever make a complaint to any official. lol

This subject falls under the category of being oblivious to those around you, which causes more than just noise pollution.  The house across the street has a water pump that apparently has some loose parts inside because when it turns on, it sounds like a firehouse bell going off.  You can hear it clearly from the far end of the village.  Does the owner of that house not realize there are people living in the houses just meters away?  Or does he realize that but just not care?

I hate those unmuffled motorcycles too.  The kids ride them to school and my ears become deadened for a good 20-30 seconds whenever one passes by if I don't have a free hand to plug my ears.  The school principal should make these kids park in a lot down the street and walk the remaining half-km to the school.

Roosters in CM are a huge problem.

That's what i hate the most of the countryside, those nasty roosters who all start at 3-4 am untill 9 or so...

Also the Wat shouldn't make so much noise as they do.

And the roosters are even totally useless, they use them for fights and bet on them, absolutely a no go for buddhists...

But don't worry, i won't go out of BKK...

I suspect that the constant noise from birth leads to hearing loss such that as adults they are desensitised. Conversations are shouted even when sitting next to each other. The Chinese are similar.

A lot of it is flat-out intimidation. Mental health problems are undoubtedly on the rise - both amongst those wannabes who create noise pollution, and those who suffer from it.

It reminds me of a mass shooting that occurred down South about ten years ago. (Not in an area usually associated with insurgency either.) A 52 year old local guy shot dead 8 people (1 also wounded). His neighbors had been deliberately taunting him for years with loud karaoke parties in the garden. They disregarded his frequent complaints. The dead included the householder - the woman director of the local hospital and several of her staff.

There have been quite a few shootings as a result of noise in recent months.
