Hi everyone,

I'm planning to marry my Thai girlfriend in the coming six months or so, but seem to have hit a bit of a snag. I need to get an affidavit of freedom to marry from the Swedish embassy, and on their website they list "proof of annual income" as a requirement. I've been a student for the last couple of years, and therefore haven't had an income. I do, however, have the 400,000 baht in a Thai bank account needed to apply for an extension of stay based on being married to a Thai.

I'm going to call the embassy later this week to get this clarified, but maybe someone here has some experience or input to share as well? Is there an actual requirement from the Thai government about showing a regular income in order to get married (not getting an extension of stay based on being married, but actually getting married)?

Any thoughts on the subject are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

So here's a bit of an update.

The embassy says that they'll issue the affidavit no problem, but that I might encounter issues further down the line. Gonna go there in a few weeks, get the affidavit and see if we can use it to get married.

I would suggest that your embassy are trying to make you aware of the financial requirements by Thai Immigration to get a visa/extension.

I brought that up during my phone call with them, but they made it very clear that this was a separate requirement and that the 40,000 baht per month/400,000 in a bank account had nothing to do with it.

Thanks for chipping in. I haven't seen this requirement on any other embassy website, so I'm inclined to believe it's just a matter of someone mixing up marriage requirements with extension requirements as well. It's been on several iterations on the Swedish embassy website, though, so it's quite long-running ????

I'm not expecting any problems, but I'll report back in any case once we're hitched. Cheers, guys.

You're talking to an idiot. There are no financial requirements for a foreigner marrying a Thai.

Just say anything to shut them up.

Thought I'd post an update for future reference.

Got the affidavit from my embassy without any problems, and they included my bank account balance on the affidavit (400,000+ baht). Brought it to the amphur in Cha Am today and got married without any issues.
