Anti-military dictatorship rap song tops iTunes downloads in Thailand

An anti-military dictatorship rap song has topped Thailand's download list on iTunes after police and the government threatened legal action against the Rap Against Dictatorship (RAD) group.

 

The Prathet Goo Mee (My F...king Country's Got...) went to the top of Thailand's iTunes download list on Saturday morning to the cheers of RAD who posted a message to thank its fans.

 

The music video was uploaded to YouTube on Monday. By Saturday morning, the YouTube clip was viewed more than 5.518 million times and received over 297,000 likes and over 4,900 dislikes. It also drew over 35,000 comments.

 

The video shows different rappers singing about social and political issues, especially those surrounding military coups.

 

The backdrop in the video shows a historic scene from the massacre on October 6, 1976, when state forces and far-right paramilitaries attacked student protesters on the campus of Thammasat University and the adjacent Sanam Luang Square in Bangkok.

 

On Friday, Pol Colonel Siriwat Deepor, the deputy spokesman of the Technology Crime Suppression Division, said police had already been ordered to identify the rappers and explore charges.

 

Police believe the rappers’ actions could have violated the Computer Crimes Act, which prohibits computer information inconsistent with the truth, undermines national security or causes public panic, he said.

I wouldn't want to be in those rappers's shoes, sorry. Somehow they will pay some price for it sooner or later. Maybe say goodbye to their career... in Thailand that is.

I heard that their next song Will feature prayut cha-cha-cha and it will be titled "we love the military (sorry for the misunderstanding)"

It Will be featured on a new Thai  government controlled platform called thaitunes that will put iTunes out of business.

Well, unless a civilian elected government is handed a mandate by the people to finally chain and muzzle the military once and for all and then change the constitution once again.  But I'm thinking that would be a pipe-dream at best. 
Speaking of pipe-dreams, a 'smart' junta would legalize marijuana as a 'stoned' populace is an apathetic populace and as such they could hold on to power for the next 100 years.

More likely is a new coup that undoes the referendum. 

Because a civilian vote can always be vetoed by the junta if the junta feels like the wrong people won....

 

 

PS, cannabis and apathy is just a myth. Usually people smoking start to see things clearly and start asking annoying questions.....very dangerous for dictators, ask Nixon.

It's just about always students who lead or at least start revolutions to overthrow the old guard of whatever kind.

 

The notion of a 'peasant revolution' is of course a contradiction in terms. But I plan to show this to my peasant family tonight, just in case ...
