Forty-three Iranian inmates have been approved for transfer to serve their remaining time behind bars in their home country, said Corrections Department chief Narat Sawettanan on Wednesday.

The prisoner transfer committee permitted the transfer of the drug offenders, of whom 23 would fly to Iran today (Wednesday), with the other 20 following tomorrow.

Iran's embassy adviser Mohammad Taghi Soltan Mohammadi took responsibility for the handover, he said.

The exchange was conducted under the Procedure for International Cooperation in the Enforcement of Penal Sentences Act 1984 and the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced People, signed by 37 countries, including France, Spain, Canada, the UK, the US, Germany, Nigeria, Cambodia and Japan.

Narat said that the department had transferred 1,118 prisoners to their home countries since 1990 while 17 Thais had been transferred back.

A foreign prisoner must obtain approval from the prisoner transfer committee and must have their case finalised in court as well as having served more than one-third of the sentence and still have at least a year left in the home country.

The prisoner transfer enabled inmates to be near their families to help improve behaviour and reduce the chances of reoffending, Narat added.

Reduce chance of re-offending? How?

Prisons the world over don't have a clue, and more likely won't give a continental flying F* whether inmates re-offend. Besides, they get deported if they live to see the day of release here anyway.

A few years ago it seemed that nearly every day an Iranian was busted at the airport for trying to smuggle "ice."  It was as if they were buying it at the duty-free.

I wonder how many of those are in this bunch.  Also have to wonder what the Iran gov't is going to do to them, like flogging.

BANGKOK, 1 November 2018 (NNT) - The Department of Corrections has transferred 43 Iranian inmates back to their home country under the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons.

Department of Corrections Director-General Pol Col Naras Savestanan revealed the agency has approved the transfer of the 43 Iranian nationals to continue to serve their sentence in Iran.

The first batch of 23 Iranians were transported to Iran today, while the 20 others will follow tomorrow. The Iranian ambassador to Thailand represented the Iranian government to receive them.

The Correction Department chief said Thailand has transferred prisoners to 37 countries around the globe with a total of 1,118 foreign prisoners having been transferred from Thailand to the country of their nationality, and 17 Thai inmates having been transferred from foreign countries to Thailand.

He said the scheme will be beneficial to the prisoners as it will allow them to re-align themselves to society in their own country upon completely serving their sentence.

Hmm, why the one way traffic ????

Perhaps 17 connected Thais returned to serve the remainder of their sentences only to be immediately released on landing.

The thousand or so other Thais imprisoned abroad begged to remain where they are to serve their sentences. ????

Why the imbalance in the figures?  Thais do not misbehave whilst abroad?  Or don't get caught?

As we all know they are practically saints who would do wrong and certainly to smart for any foreign police force
