Just a simple question, if you hold a Non Immigrant ‘O’ Multi Entry Visa

And you leave Thailand; you need to get a re-entry permit…? to keep the visa valid.

So say if you leave Thailand to go to Cambodia for a few days’s as you are leaving Thailand

Do you need to get a re-entry permit stamped in your passport..?

Or am I missing some thing about the re-entry stamp issue.

Thanks

I'm on a Non Immigrant 'o' Multi entry Visa also, my understanding is that you can exit and re-enter as many times as you like, up until the time the visa expires, usually a Year, thats the 'Multi Entry' bit. If you are on an 'extention' of this visa then things are different, and this is when the re-entry permit comes into play.

I could be wrong.

If you have a multi entry visa (called M or Multi) that will be valid on your return date you do not need a re-entry permit as you will receive another 90 day permitted to stay stamp from the visa.

The re-entry permit is normally only used for those on one year extensions of stay - to keep there extension alive. It can also be used for those on single entry visas who want to keep there original permitted to stay date alive (short trip out and return).

This doesnt make sense to me? how do you get extra time by doing it that way?

You have to remember that there are two things here:

1. Visa, put in your passport by a Thai consulate

2. Entry stamp, put in your passport by Immigration every time you enter Thailand.

So let’s say you get a multiple-entry non-O visa in your passport, issued on 20 FEB 2007 and valid for travel to Thailand until 19 FEB 2008. Until the expiration date of the visa, i.e. until 19 FEB 2008, you can enter Thailand as many times as you like. On each entry, you will receive an entry stamp giving you permission to stay for 90 days from the date of entry.

Actually, on the visa it will probably say “must be utilised before 19 FEB 2008” and it is advisable to make the last entry no later than 18 FEB 2008 because the Immigration officer admitting you may say that this is the last date you are allowed to use the visa.

Easy really if you think about it.

Visa issued from your country say a Multi "O" or "B". Multi means as many times as you want to go out out the country you can with a maximum stay of 90 days. With NO Re-entries needed.

However if you have an "o" you can then change this to a Retirement Visa or a Marriage Visa (if your married to a thai) When changing to something like this you become a resident in Thailand, therefore the shoe is on the other foot as the Thai's want to know where you are. So a re-entry allows you to go out of Thailand and back in, hence Re-entry.

To forestall possible confusion: you do not change your visa, nor your visa status. You apply for and obtain an annual extension of permission to stay. This is done at an Immigration office within Thailand.
