Ministry plans to increase income ceiling for families eligible for child subsidies

By The Nation

The Social Development and Human Security Ministry plans to seek Cabinet approval to expand the base income of families eligible for child subsidies.

Somkid Somsri, director general of the ministry's Children and Youths Department said that if the proposal is approved by the Cabinet, the annual income ceiling of eligible families would be raised form Bt36,000 to Bt100,000 in line of criteria of people eligible for welfare state ID cards.

The number of children eligible for the monthly subsidy of Bt600 would be increased from 681,629 now to about 1.44 million.

Currently, poor parents are given the subsidies for newborn child until the age of three. The ministry will also seek to increase the age for subsidies to six years, Somkid said.

Somkid said a non-governmental organisation campaigning for child welfare policies has called on the government to make subsidies universal and to expand the subsidy period to six years.

Somkid said if the subsidies are made universal, the government would have to pay subsidies to 4.318 million children and the administration may not have enough budget.

Soooooo...

In the months before an election, around 750,000 more children and their parents will receive an increased subsidy. And, their parent's identification number and all personal details will be recorded in their welfare card.

Er... Ahem... Oh... Ah... Er...

Isn't this the kind of populism that the coup was supposed to stop? Isn't this the kind of thing that is now illegal? Isn't this exactly what people said they didn't like about Thaksin?

Weapons-Grade hypocrisy.

Truly Weapons-Grade Hypocrisy...

Now if they only increase the paltry amount of old age pension stipend the government give to people who worked very hard all their lives for meager salaries that will be the right thing to do and not a moment too soon...

To begin, the government will run a deficit of Bt450 billion for FY 2019 that began October 1, 2018.

Also this year:

New tax breaks

  • A couple that has a first child will be entitled to an annual tax deduction worth Bt30,000, and to a deduction of Bt60,000 annually for a second newborn.
  • Expenses associated with the delivery of a child are also tax deductible – up to Bt60,000 per child.
  • Employers would be entitled to a tax deduction of up to twice the actual cost of child care, but not exceeding Bt1 million annually.

The Thai Niyom program - Bt47 billion

Thai Niyom Yung Yuen program - Bt150 billion

Consumer Fuel Subsidy - 30 billion baht

Village and Urban Community Fund Project - 20 billion baht

Pracharat Project - Bt40 billion

20-year National Strategy - Bt10 billion

Blue Flag Pracharat Store program - BT41 billion

vs

National Security - Bt329.2 billion

vs

The Education Ministry - Bt297.4 billion

Indeed the administration may not have enough budget.
