Michael Avenatti arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of domestic violence

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Attorney Michael Avenatti, who represents adult film star Stormy Daniels in her legal battles with U.S. President Donald Trump, was arrested in Los Angeles on Wednesday on suspicion of domestic violence, a police spokesman said.

 

No further details were immediately available, but police spokesman Jeff Lee said Avenatti was in the process of being formally booked.

No one was available for comment at Avenatti's law office in Newport Beach, south of Los Angeles.

 

Avenatti came to national prominence as the lawyer for Daniels, a porn actress whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, who sued Trump for defamation after he denied her assertion that she had a sexual encounter with him in 2006.

 

That lawsuit was dismissed by a federal judge last month. Daniels has filed a separate lawsuit over a $130,000 (£100,068) hush-money agreement stemming from the alleged encounter.

 

Avenatti's clients have included Julie Swetnick, who accused Brett Kavanaugh of aggressive sexual behaviour before his confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court.

surely the position should be that all allegations need proper consideration, vs blind acceptance or denial.

 

with regards Avenatti... ( @Nyezhov) hopefully he will be subject to a full and proper investigation, vs what (investigation) was permitted re kavanaugh.... I expect this to happen... surely we should all expect this to happen.

With regard to Kavanaugh, I didn't think the sex allegations could be proven to the extent that his nomination should fail.  However, he displayed completely improper temperment, reckless disregard for the truth about his high school and university days, and was unduly partisan with questionable adherance to stare decisis (I worry about his opinion on the right of privacy under the Constitution which has a 50 year history of being followed).

 

With regard to Avennati, as I am an attorney and have worked through multiple partnership dissolutions which are messier than divorces,  I am quite familar how these things work out in court.  From my understanding, Avennati's firm hired a tax service that failed to turn over his tax payment, and he ended up paying $1.5 million to the IRS, and then owing $2 million to one of his partners.  I don't think this impugns his intelligence that it ended up in court, and it didn't go his way.

 

Trump and his cohorts (the Enquirer and TMZ) began targeting rich donors for sex harassment/assault claims after Trump began defending such allegations in 2016.  I wouldn't put it past Trump's boys to set up Avennati.  I'm just not going to jump to conclusions until LAPD issues its investigative report.  LAPD has become one of the best in these investigations due to the large number of high-profile complaints involving celebrities.

Me too. Ive done those too. Isnt it true that an equally plausible alternative to you statement is fraud? Ever see that in a dissolution? How about his coffee shop gig with the actor? Based on what you know and have read, if you were represnting the plaintiff against him, wouldnt you allege fraud?

You are missing the point.  The vast majority of posters who are fed up with Trump and the GOP were eager to see a proper investigation into Judge K- the same as you are suggesting for Avenatti.  I'm yet to see a dem suppoter here suggest Avenatti should not be investigated fully.

He has been "investigated" fully. The police believe they had probable cause to believe he committed a crime.

 

So the issue is now whether the prosecutor can overcome his presumption of innocence and prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

 

Have you read the Grassley report by the way?
