Video: Death of bicyclist due to food by the side of the road, says brother

CCTV footage showed the moment a young man on a bicycle fell into the path of a pick-up with a trailer.

The bicyclist died and his elder brother posted the footage saying that he was killed because food was spread, presumably to dry, by the side of the road.

There was much comment on social media, said Sanook, with the majority of posters saying that the food had nothing to do with it.

The man had fallen off his bicycle under the wheels of the trailer and would have died irrespective of there being food all about, they said.

I am sure these farmers would be ultra pissed off if cars etc simply drove over it

That's what they do in Philippines and farmers accept it on country roads. They have nowhere else built to dry crops, so accept some damages incurred.

the food has nothing to do with it at all, it is on the other side of the road.
the guy could not ride a bicycle straight, could not stop, and unfortunately fell to the right.
may he rest in peace, and not ride a bicycle while drunk in his next life.

It is disturbing to think that it could have been ME driving my pick-up and a p..shead falls under my wheels.

Exactly - the main reason why I refuse to own or operate a motor vehicle in Thailand.

I wish I didn't have to sometimes, my main reason being that I like Singha and SangSom.  But what's your alternative....let one of THEM drive you to where you want to go.

I always wondered how much chicken poop was allowed per ton to pass  food inspection?  ????

I let a Thai drive me only under duress. Public transit BTS/MRT/Buses/Trains, etc - foldable bicycles. Automobile taxis only (on very rare occasion), ideally with seat belts fastened - never plant my you-know-what onto a motorbike.

I abhor walking around Bangkok, so I cycle and try to do so as much on the sidewalk/pavements as possible. If I go to the road, it takes an authorization form and three signatures. ????  (maybe I'm exaggerating a wee bit on this point)

All this has saved me a lot of baht and dealing with Thai taxi operators, to boot!

I have this General Rule #1 - If the Thais do it, it is a strong indication that you should not.

Plenty of blame for everyone. The truck driver is in the middle of the road to avoid what appears to be drying rice. The drunk cyclist fell over. If the truck was fully on his side of the road there may have been space for the cyclist to fall and not get hit, just a close call. For sure the farmers shoulder some of the blame. For me the truck driver the least.

Yes, there certainly appears to be rice drying alongside the road but on the OPPOSITE side of the road from the cyclist. I agree he looks to be under the influence and fell into the path of the lorry. Drying rice on rural roads in Isaan is very common and in some instances I have had no option but to drive through it.

Do the Thais not ride their bicycles/motorcycles on the pavement?

The sidewalk shoppers, lotto sales and the smart ones do and the BMA (Bangkok Metropolitan Administration) publicly supports pedestrian/bicycle sidewalk sharing. Of course, the exception proves the rule. Most Bangkok cyclists are on the road to make a better transit time and a few of those make it a point to be an obstacle and irritant to motor vehicle operators.

Note that I stated "it is a strong indication" under General Rule #1. The rule also applies in reference to stupid and/or oblivious foreigners, several of which have been road kill in Thailand thinking they were immortal (I guess or just not thinking).

strange rule,
I know (of) many people from Thailand that do enjoy a drink while on the job. (preferably champagne)
Why should I not have similar pleasures and give up an occasional glass of bubbles and moreover even jobbing ?

I don't agree.

The cyclist fell on his own lane...the car was on his lane as well because of that selfish farmer who had to dry something on the road. (which the car avoided).

In this case, nothing to do with the food. However, if I am out cycling and someone has put food in the cycle lane to dry, I would just ride over it.

Was driving couple of days ago in sisaket  countryside. Saw a brand new road with bicycle lane all taken up by farmers’ padi grains laid out onto blue plastic sheet same as in video. Miles and miles of it. Seems to be all over the province.

same here! ... just returned to bkk; but had to go Ubon and took a Sisaket area backroad from the 24 to the 226 & there was simply not enough room left  clear on the bitumen for 2 vehicles to pass, without at least one of them needing to squash some grain!

he was obviously at fault but the fact there are some thais that use the roadside to dry food means bike riders cannot stay off the main road itself. There are several places we have driven through where you have to move out to the centre of the road due to various things being dried out on big sheets of plastic etc(you can see how far out they have encroached in the video), I am sure these farmers would be ultra pissed off if cars etc simply drove over it yet vehicles have the right to use the road, those drying stuff out do not. It can cause problems when there are cars coming both ways, while that is not the case here farmers should dry their goods out away from the roads so it is not closing part of the road

Drying seasonal rice on roads is quite commonplace and acceptable.

Cars do drive over it.. Happens all the time they are drying the rice.. common for cars to drive over it slowlt

Well, I will break the mold here and say that people here make it very difficult to feel sorry for them as they are the causes of all the ridiculous circumstances that arise in this country.

Generally, everyone is happy to play dress up and show off their latest expensive biking gear.

The look-cool factor and big face factor is important to them.

Then they ride among the roads on highways like they are on motorbikes or autos even pretending they are invincible and making the already world's most dangerous roads ever more dangerous.

And, if we asked 1000 Thais if they think cycling on highways here is dangerous, 1000 would laugh and say it is not dangerous and "farang think too much" and "farang not understand".

And, if a farang tried to side with the cyclists to complain that laying stuff on the roads is wrong, said farang would also be told that he doesn't understand Thai ways and should not criticize.

So, I say, leave them to slaughter each other as they don't want sympathies or help from outsiders.
