BANGKOK, 28 November 2018 (NNT) – Currency Exchang Super Rich has unveiled the Visit Thailand card, designed to allow tourists to travel in Thailand without the need for cash.

The card is available at Suvarnabhumi Airport and branches of Super Rich nationwide and allows travelers to top up with a variety of currencies. Once credit is placed on the card, it can be used to pay for a variety of services and goods where Master Card is accepted. Users can download the Visit Thailand Card app to their mobile phone to track usage and manage their card. A top up can be done at any Super Rich branch and while there is no fee, the cards cost an initial 150 baht.

Deputy Prime Minister ACM Prajin Junthong remarked this week that the government is working towards making Thailand a digital economy in which financial technology is used across sectors. He said that the Visit Thailand card will help usher in the digital economy while providing travelers with greater safety as they will no longer have to carry cash.

Bangkok was recently named by Master Card the world’s top destination for the third year in a row. The ranking was based on a survey of over 20 million people throughout 2017 and included Thai cities Phuket and Pattaya within the top 20. The credit card provider also found that Bangkok is fifth and Phuket is tenth in the world for expenditure by tourists.

Prepaid MC. I suppose you'll need to show ID to get one or is Thailand promoting money laundering now?

Passport. It's stated in the article.

You also get a super duper SIM card with one day of Internet access included.

What on earth is xxx%? In addition there is likely an ATM withdrawal fee, plus and annual charge apart from the initial cost of the card. Not looking that attractive.

Q: Is there any fee?
A: Card packaging fee is 150 baht and 100 baht for annual fee (collect at the yearend). If you need to replace the card, it will be 150 baht for replacement. To withdraw money at the ATM, there will be charge of xxx% of the withdrawal amount which will be deducted from the value in the card and also charge from the ATM provider (various based on each provider).

Try telling that to the immigration office when he demands to see 20,000 cash

Are they still doing that? Unbelievable.

The only group I can see this applying to are tourists which arrive in Thailand without their own banks cards holding a wad of cash?

Most bank cards come with visa / MC etc (be them debit or credit). So the idea behind this does not make sense. Why would you withdraw money from your overseas bank which has a visa etc facility, put it onto this card and then use this. Is it not better to just miss out the middle man and use your own bank from the start?

I do not understand the appeal unless it offers discounts or some other incentive.

If it can be used as an alternative to a credit / debit card for online transactions, then that could be worthwhile. For a couple of years I used a virtual Visa card (from Entropay) but, as of last month, they stopped providing service to people living outside EEA. Benefit of a dedicated card for online purchases is that if it gets hacked, your exposure is minimised. However receiving OTP by email is a bit of a pain.

Q: Can I use the card to purchase online?
A: : Yes. OTP (One-time password) will be sent to the email that the cardholders provide at the card registration.

Super Rich, AFAIK, typically deals only in cash.

So I was gonna ask, after reading the OP info, how does one "top up" the card at Super Rich?  If it requires using cash, that's not doing much to avoid people needing to have/carry cash. On the other hand, if they're going to allow topping up via credit or debit cards, that might be a different thing.

But after reading the fee info above, I think I'll not waste my time any further!

Anytime I have to pay money to simply spend my money, count me out ????

It's hard to see any USP for this idea. But then again, perhaps they're simply hoping to make 150 Baht from flogging a useless card and an annual fee for those negligent enough not to cancel it.

The cash only topup at superrich sort of takes the wind out of that one. Could use to let kids shop online or something like that, maybe. The Chinese that only have Unionpay that won't work everywhere might be interested, is there a superrich in swampy where they can herd the crowd?

In the top test with fees it says 3%...????

I would presume that "super rich" people already have whatever needed of various platinum-cards and cash, and some of them may even have someone employed to manage the cards, and carry and count the cash...????

They obviously just amended that today. Perhaps they are perusing this thread to see how the card is being perceived.

In the bin with it. It's a load of rubbish. 3% plus ATM fee for cash withdrawals? Poor when you already have to go through the trouble of bringing your own cash to top it up. Rubbish.

Even if you use you own country's card to take from an ATM, you can pay as little as 0.75% overall.
