so I go to the north pattaya bus station to check the schedule and the company that runs buses to the airport and back said it costs 300 baht with hotel pickup.  I said I don't need to be picked at my hotel, I'll get to the bus station myself, and ask how much that costs.  they said it still costs 300 baht.  didn't there used to be 2 prices?

last week when I landed at the airport I to the desk where they sell bus tickets to pattaya and got there at 9:50.  they were supposed to stay open till 10.  the guy behind the counter says 'not open'  I asked 'are the tickets sold out?"  he says 'closed.  come back tomorrow'  so I had to pay a taxi 1000 baht.

what is wrong with these people?

I talked him down from 1500.  I had to stand there for like 20 minutes before he realized I would rather spend the night at the airport than pay a taxi 1500.LOL

That's the "Jomtien" bus (389 bus).

Last departure is 10 PM (and then going to North Pattaya only).

And likely it was full? (as often during the day).

I had this experience in September, supposed to be "off season" and still crowded.

(all the world has internet and knows where to go for the cheap bus)

They had increased to 30 min cycle and still couldn't get on the next bus.

Like it or not but it's a know fact that there is no 24/7 service between Suv. and Pattaya.

whoever they are.  the counter at b1 in airport says they're open till 10pm, but closed early.

Do you not realise where you are? If you want things to be like on the sign, go live in a western country.

One of the first things one needs to learn when entering the borders of LOS, is that they do things differently there, and what it says on the box is not necessarily in the box.

While it was quite annoying when it affected me personally, on the whole I thought it was one of the things I liked about Thailand.

BTW, far as I know, Bell bus always had ONE price, and always included hotel pick up drop off. However, I'm surprised that it's now 300 baht. Used to be around 100, then 200. Unless the other company has also increased prices substantially, 300 is excessive.
