Phuket cashes in on scads of scad

Phuket’s Nai Han Beach turned into a bustling fish market on Sunday night after a bumper harvest of at least 3,000 hardtail scad, a kind of mackerel, were netted just off the shore and put up for sale at Bt100 for three.

 

 

The vast catch was not, despite rumours emerging on social media, a sign of some upcoming natural disaster, fisherman Ponchai Faingam chuckled.

 

 

The scad swim close to shore every November to January to feed on smaller fish, he said, though there are more than usual this year at Nai Han, Kata, Karon and Freedom beaches. 

 

 

Residents and tourists happily joined the food chain, flocking to the shore to buy the fresh-from-the-sea fish, each weighing about six grams, which usually sell at markets for Bt70-Bt80 per kilogram.

Are these fish also known as grunion? If so, would also be known as a "grunion run" in southern California.

I thought a Grunion was a much smaller fish,which come inshore to breed,

this is a type of Mackerel that comes inshore to feed. not the same.

Yes, the grunion do come onshore to breed, but this photo looked surprisingly similar to a grunion run with the fish about the same size. I ask because the information passed along by the news services are not consistently factual. Plus it appeared the fish had beached themselves much the same as the grunion. Anyway I am simply curious and, thank you for your reply.

Bumper harvest!!! To me it looks like overfishing. Must be lovely smell next morning for all the tourists coming sunbathing on this beach.
