Mueller - ex-Trump adviser Flynn provided substantial assistance in Russia probe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn cooperated with its probe into possible collusion between Trump's election campaign team and Moscow, and it asked a federal judge not to sentence him to prison.

 

Prosecutors said in a court filing that Flynn had provided "substantial assistance" in Mueller's probe, including giving "firsthand information about the content and context of interactions between the transition team and Russian government officials."

 

They also said he provided help on other criminal investigations, although those details were redacted because the probes are ongoing.

 

Flynn, who held the White House job for only 24 days, pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia. He will be sentenced in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Dec. 18.

 

He is so far the only member of Trump's administration to plead guilty to a crime uncovered during Mueller's wide-ranging investigation into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 U.S. election and potential collusion by Trump aides.

Flynn has been very cooperative with the investigation which is now heading directly at Trump and his family.

 

Liberals are understandably loving it.

This Flynn guy is a career military officer.  He knows damn well that once they got ya and have their teeth in ya they're gonna get all there is to get.  The worst thing you can do in such a case is give half-truths, because if they are found out you lose any merit that you've gained so far.  But it appears that many in the DT cabal haven't figured that out.

Hes just warming up mate - give him time.  Watergate took more than 2 years.  Mueller has brought down the Gambino crime family and now hes out to get the Dumbino crime family.  His strategy so far has been all about getting the pigeons to talk and the rats to leave the sinking ship.  This mob has so much dirt on them and so little loyalty that it hasnt really been very hard.  Lets see where it goes.  I cant wait for the whip to crack.

Great point, Bendejo!  I wouldn't be surprised if the Mueller team has or is exploring that option.  

 

However, although I have no experience prosecuting criminal actions, I think a RICO action can get tricky and difficult.  I believe that there are two layers that need to be proven.  It was well worth the time when prosecutors were having problems getting to the top guys in the Mafia who were ordering the crimes. but they were not dirtying their hands by carrying out the ordered prosecuted crimes.  I understand that this was the original purpose of RICO. 

 

It may be easier for Mueller's team to prosecute on crimes like obstruction of justice (if he was still among us, Nixon could tell you about that one) and also follow the paper trails of banks.

 

Still, thanks for bringing that up!  From what we have seen, maybe the Trump family, former friends, et al. have been so clumsy that a RICO charge could work out.  So, it may still be a worthwhile avenue for the Mueller team.  Yet, as we well know, the Mueller team have been very good about keeping their mouths shut.  We shall see.   

 

I sense that things will get more and more interesting.

What this and many articles leaves out but nbc states is that these other criminal investigations are "outside the purview of Mueller"

 

NBC News: There appears, although the redacted documents do not make it completely clear, that there is a separate criminal investigation going on outside of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's purview for which Flynn has been providing significant assistance.

I believe it's not meant to make sense. I think he's writing poetry. I haven't changed a word but broke up the lines to make the poetic nature of his writing clearer:
