Full Time: Expat community reels over death of Matthew Pond

PHUKET: The expat community on Phuket this week was stunned by the sudden passing away of Matthew Pond, the News and Sports Editor at The Phuket News, after a brief battle against cancer.

 

After being diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer only early last month, he suffered serious breathing difficulties at about 5am last Thursday morning (Nov 29) and was rushed to hospital, but pronounced dead on arrival.

 

He was 47, and is survived by his wife, Marisa, and eight-year-old son, Joshua.

Tragic indeed, much too young.

For you, somebody bringing God into this gives you a reason to rant against somebody's religious thoughts about his death.

Isn't that disgusting?

I am not into religion but let anybody ventilate his religious thoughts.

I think if you don’t want to be ridiculed for your superstitions, keep them to yourself. 

 

One person  has the opinion there’s a God that makes innocent people suffer and is okay with it, another person has a equally valid opinion that that’s nonsense.

Hey they are just trying to bring  comfort for Matts wife child family and friends, we may not always agree with what's said and that doesn't make one right and the other wrong but everyone has a right to express what they think without being bludgeoned by  criticism.

Unfortunately, the initial statement assumed that they share his religious views. If one does not believe that there are "angels" playing golf and that a  middle aged man would be killed to  make up a foursome, it would be offensive. More so, if one is religious and takes the gospel seriously and understands the concept of heaven, as there are no golf courses in heaven.

 

Appreciably, some who need to cope with a tragic event will offer statements that assure themselves, but will not  help the grieving party. It is more appropriate in a situation like this not to make assumptions and if one must offer condolences, then to do so in a neutral manner such as;

"I extend my condolences to the family and may they have the strength to carry on."  That's all that need be done. If one knows the  bereaved, then call or visit at an appropriate time.  These are the basic good manners that  we should have been taught long ago.
