I broke my Taxi Cherry

Finally, after all these years, I broke my Taxi Cherry and can join the cadre of screaming howling taxi cab haters. This, gentle readers, is my story of horror....

 

There me and my kid were at Nothanburi Pier heading to Koh Kret. There were no boats around, so after she scurried off to buy some Kanom from a vendor she has already hit like 3x (she loves the Nothanburi Market) we hailed a cab, a youngish dude. I showed him on my phone that were were going to Wat Sanam Nauea in Pak Kret which is off Chaeng Wattana Road near the bridge. I made sure he repeated it twice, Wat Sanam Neaua. Koh Kret, you know? Chai. its about 150 plus minus depending on route, depending on traffic. He starts off going the right way, I chat with him in pidgen and he says he "live Nothanburi".

 

He heads off in the opposite direction. OK, cool, I can see on google that there is traffic on the northern back road route, so I figure he is going to beat the traffic by heading to Nahkon In Road, cross the river, cut over to RatchaPruek and head north, thats the 150 baht ride, done it before. And it beats the traffic.

 

I get distracted by my kid and look up, he is heading south on Ratcha Pruek. Whoa Cowboy, where you going. He makes gestures and say traffic, traffic, and by the time we sort that out, he is heading back over the River to the Bangkok side towards Chatuchak. Ok then, the meter is at 150, we are still heading the wrong way. I spy a police booth and say: stop here, stop here. He does. I tell him he was trying to rip us off (this is done with pidgen and google), he denies it, I tell him Im not paying. You pay. No, we talk police. Ok OK, no pay. We get out, he zooms off but not before I get pics of his card and plate.

 

Well, I say to kid, my first Taxi attempted rip off, well she replies, we should have taken Grab, thats what we do in China (or whatever their app is that they use in Shanghai). Know it all little twerp, she the scurries off to find some coffee and I go ask a street vendor lady what is the best way back to the boats, explained what happened (figuring we would ride back), she speaks nominal English. She then talks to her friend. Who talks to someone else (there were no farang here at all so it was like whoa, whats this dude doing here with some young babe in short shorts). Meanwhile, my brat comes back and says I got us a Grab. So we are waiting and all of a sudden I am surrounded by Hairdresser shop ladies, one with shit still in her hair and a smock on, one of the hairdresser ladies says in perfect Oxford English "Sir are you OK? Can I help you? Do you need help?" and she is genuinely concerned. They are all staring at me expectantly, like vultures as if Oh boy this is great, thought it was just going to be a boring sunday, now we have a lost farang, maybe crime, hope my cell phone is charged type look. I explained to the English speaker, no its cool, that taxi driver played games, now we have to go all the way back, etc, and she keeps sayin "Are you sure you are OK? We can help" to the point that I was thinking of faking a seizure to give them something to talk about. No its fine and give her a nice respectful Wai. She then turns to the girls and starts explaining in Thai to various Ehhhs and Mmmms, I chime in "Taxi driver no jai dee" to which they all laugh, our Grab pulls up and 45 minutes 300 baht later we are at the ferry.....the grab guy was a cop LOL.

 

I feel like I truly belong here now. I only wish there would have been more violence and threats so folks would approve of me.

 

Oh and in the cab ride to the ferry I went to the Land Transport website and reported him.

I think the hairdressers mistook "your kid" in "short shorts" for your gf and thought maybe they could cut her grass and replace the young thing with a mature woman.

But fortunately, between your combined transportation talents, the day ended with limited damage.

Lets clarify, were you with your child ? I (may be wrongly) assumed you were here alone and free/single so to speak.

I am very articulate in Thai. I can say left, right and straight ahead. That doesn't seem to help in making them understand; they still go wherever they want when it suits.

The brat flew in from Chinaand decided to visit her Dad to get free restaurant food before she hits a beach down South....

 

Now we are on our way to Ayyuthaya so I can pay for the train and a meal and transport etc. Im making her ride 3rd class....

The title of your OP should have been reluctant dad with problems all the time in Thailand tries to do what he cant.. Jeez wonder if the daughter feels the same way about you that you do about her..

I get why you started the topic. Anytime someone complains about a dodgy cabbie someone else usually comes along to inform everyone how they have been coming to or living in Thailand for ten, twenty years etc. and how only stupid people get ripped off. I can get in to a taxi miles from nowhere and be surprised how the vast majority of times I am taken to my destination without any drama... but then sometimes you aren't.

 

I will get into a cab a couple of times a week out my way to go to a local destination ten kilometres away that almost everyone knows, I can do this for a whole year without a problem, but then one day it happens. First cabbie looks at me clueless, doesn't comprehend a single word I'm saying, try another taxi, same again so suddenly I'm wondering how all the previous drivers were able to understand yet two in a row suddenly don't (it's not due to heavy traffic). Third cab comes along, I get in and it's straight to my destination as usual. The first two, even with basic instructions in Thai like go straight, turn left, with the destination given in Thai that every other driver understands without ever asking me to repeat it were met with blank looks... Burmese drivers I guess...

Spoil? I toughen her up. That's why when the Langkawi earthquake hit instead of sobbing on the beach she hunkered down in place at the bar. No food,no lights, but plenty of booze.

No takers as of yet. The bottle of Lao Khao that she has tabled as a bounty doesn't seem to have had much interest. Perhaps someone will take it around Songkran, depending on their state of desperation.
