PHUKET:-- Phuket began its Seven Days of Danger road-safety campaign for New Year 2019 at midnight last night with two minor motorbike accidents, but so far no deaths, officials have reported.

Today (Dec 27), is the first day of the campaign, with with deaths and injuries from road accidents allocated strictly to 24-hour periods, from midnight to midnight, on each day of the campaign.

The first accident resulted in the injury of a 28-year-old Russian man who officials identified only as “Mr Ambolov A”.

Sadly the stats mean very little.
Normal gathering of road safety stats would include 3 categories - deaths, serious injuries and minor injuries.
It appears that Thailand only normally publishes numbers of deaths and only publishes a general survey of unspecified injuries over the holiday period.
They would be collated from various sources and analyzed and then published.
there is no fixed limit for deaths in RTIs either.
I'm presuming these figures are produced solely from police estimates at the time if the accident and no attempt is made to record type of injury, road conditions vehicles etc etc.
it seems that road deaths per 100k is the only stat that is of interest to the media.

So long as Thailand continues to ignore the international science of road safety and makes up the rules as it goes along, it seems very unlikely there will be any significant improvement in road safety in the country.
this is particularly alarming for a country that relies so heavily on millions of foreign visitors eery year.

Only 2 minor motorbike accidents in 24 hours in the whole of Phuket?

Are either motorbikes banned from the road or is it April 1 already?

It's the first hour and a bit, judging by the times of the accident. Saw a nasty looking one yesterday not far from Makro on Patak Road.

Ambos out at least 5 times yesterday in Kamala would dispute this as well (unless they are just attending Burmese Camp fights!).

Kamala Kops haven't even strung up the tent for them to go to sleep under by Big C this year.

Saw m/bike pile into post office truck just 45 minutes ago. On Patak road karon end at the new post office logistics office. Truck was coming out of post office, cross Patak to turn right. One of these small power bikes going very fast ploughed into the driver door. Lot damage to door. Could not see condition of driver as surrounded by gawping Thais. But did see ambulance on the way.

No need for stats- it will just be a 'misunderstanding'. ????

An update to my comment above. The Kamala Kops have set up a tent. Not in town though, its across from the Muslim Cemetery (yes for the pedants I know it is within Kamala town limits but you know what I mean). Very useful location.

Guess what happened this avvy about 5pm- two motorbikes crashed by where their tent has been in the past, just down from Big C. ????

Last night they setup camp at the junction with the OR BOR TOR in Rawai around 7pm some guy told me it looked like they were only pulling over bikes not cars, I went past there tonight and the traffic was heavy coming down from the cape.
