Fury over watch scandal ruling prompts impeachment drive

BANGKOK — A good-government advocate said Friday he will launch a campaign to impeach the five anti-corruption commissioners who voted to clear the deputy junta leader of wrongdoing.

 

Srisuwan Janya said he would collect 20,000 signatures to bring an independent impeachment action against the five members of the National Anti-Corruption Commission who Tuesday voted that Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan did nothing wrong by failing to declare 22 ultra-luxury watches.

Really surprises me that the general involved is so immature about something like 'which borrowed watch will I wear today', and no quick action to put the whole matter to bed very quickly after it happened, in fact he kept saying things that kept the reactions and comments going for weeks.

Wasn’t it that the 22 watches were found at his dead friends house after Prawit had returned them, so the NACC accepted that the watches must’ve belonged to said dead friend even though there was no paperwork to prove them so?.... it’s the kind of shenanigans to be expected in this part of the world I guess

the watches could be traced through serial numbers,where and who they were sold to.i suspect it would reveal a dozen dodgy names.the NACC are as bent as a 9 baht coin.who on earth lends 22 high end watches and then kicks the bucket and he don't get them returned to the family.pure blatant lies full stop.i have no faith in this country ever going forward.

Grown up school yard bullies running the country.  What do Thai parents tell their children ?  After this and many other things, it is nauseating the way cha cha struts around, telling everyone how those who follow / serve the junta are good.   An impeachment drive would be a good start in dismantling the coup mindset

This anger clearly reveals that the people's revulsion at the sickening behaviour of its government has already become the time bomb that certain observers have predicted for many months, now. I suspect this impeachment process is a sure sign that the bomb is already ticking.

Absolutely correct.

Nothing will engender real change in Thailand - none of the political parties, none of the 'organisations': the utter corruption and criminal power that has long run rampant (held by 1% of the population) is far too deeply entrenched.

 

Only ONE way can bring about radical change now in Thailand. But I am not going to say what that is. And in any case - the Thais have not got the millions-strong, national will to implement it.

 

They have made their collective bed. So they must enjoy lying on it.

It was reported that the manufacturer's warranty cards had been checked which would show who purchased them, when and where. It was also reported that Customs records had been checked so presumably some of them had been purchased overseas. Presumably they have checked the warranty card serial numbers with the numbers on the watches. 

 

If so, then they will know exactly the purchase history.

 

What is strange is that if this is so, why 3 members voted for more investigations. Either they have all the info or they don't.

 

A few years ago, the erstwhile Chalerm was challenged on the fleet of luxury cars garaged at his mansion which he regularly used. He claimed he was looking after them for a Singapore Businessman friend who let him drive them. Case never went any further.

 

Sad for the activists who try hard and believe they'll someday make a difference. Unlikely.
