France boosts surveillance to stem flow of migrants to Britain

PARIS (Reuters) - France will tighten security at its northern ports and increase surveillance along beaches to counter the rise in migrants trying to cross the English Channel to reach Britain, its interior minister said on Friday.

More than 500 migrants, most Iranian, tried to cross the narrow stretch of water, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, during 2018, French Interior Ministry data showed.

Some 276 migrants reached British waters while the French authorities thwarted the attempts of another 228. More than 80 percent of the crossings were attempted in December.

"This action plan must enable us to put an end to these crossings of the Channel which are not only illegal but also dangerous," Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said in a statement.

"It is in our interests, as well as British interests, to do everything possible to prevent the development of new trafficking routes that might attract illegal migrants to our coast once again."

In late October 2016, France razed a sprawling migrant camp outside the northern port of Calais that served as a launch pad for migrants seeking to enter Britain hidden in trucks, trains and ferries.

The numbers trying to reach Britain increased sharply last year compared with 2017 but remained a tiny fraction of those regularly attempting to reach European Union territory by crossing the Mediterranean from northern Africa and Turkey.

Nonetheless, the Channel crossings have put pressure on the British government amid a charged political atmosphere less than three months before Britain is due to leave the EU after a referendum in which immigration was a major theme.

British Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said HMS Mersey, a Royal Navy offshore patrol vessel, was deploying to the Dover-Calais straits to stem the flow of migrants. The waterway is just 21 miles (33.8 km) wide at its narrowest point.

In the past France has done very little to prevent illegal migrants reaching the UK - as the poster stated if it wants to help illegal crossings of the channel it must stop them entering France - the fact that it does not shows little care of migrants entering the UK illegally - also are you sure pathology is the right word here!! maybe look it up in a dictionary!!

Brexiters do seem to have a pathological dislike for all thing European.

I'll think you'll find that most brexiteers do indeed like Europe immensely, just not too keen on dictatorships though.

And how does that relate to France stepping up surveillance at North Sea ports? Is France a dictatorship? Maybe that's an answer to Seaborne Freight? They're looking for ships!

Te article you refer has NOTHING to do with immigration controls only customs and excise checks - Macron himself was quoted on several occasions as saying “France should seek to flood the UK with its Calais migrants".

It is NOT narcissistic nationalism to want to protect your own borders how ridiculous!! Only a militant whingeing snowflake would believe such a thing!! Especially when it is compared to the immigration controls that other countries have - the country you're posting from in this thread being a very good example.

I do however agree with you on your last paragraph totally!! But would ask what is the alternative? Open borders that Corbyn is proposing?? The trouble with the UK is we have two very bad parties the one iN Government being slightly better than the opposition!!

"A militant whingeing snowflake.."

Something doesn't compute here.

We, in France- as well as in other western countries- fail to fight against lucrative human trafficking - our weakness resides in our democratic laws, human rights and other "humanitarian considérations" - Once illegals are in it's almost impossible to get rid of them. The sittuation in France is worse than anywhere else for being the last stop before crossing the Channel, the migratory pressure is only on the French territory, and the financial cost is colossal

In 2014 already: https://www.worldcrunch.com/culture-society/calais-crossing-an-inside-look-at-the-ugly-business-of-human-trafficking

So why don't / haven't we? Oh yes, it costs money. How much easier it is to blame on the French when our institutions are run half-heartedly and on the cheap. Look to London, not Paris for your enemy.

You won't, of course. But misanthopists never do. Settle instead for the easy answers and slogans spoonfed to you...

" Migrants are bypassing tougher cross-Channel security to get into the UK via Ireland, the BBC has discovered. Smugglers are taking migrants from Calais and Dunkirk and flying them to Dublin, from where they cross the Irish border and travel onwards to London. A people smuggler described it as "a guaranteed way to get into the UK".

Cross-Channel migrants 'targeting UK via Irish border'

Ireland and Belgium are the new frontiers in the fight against illegal migration, the National Crime Agency; Mr Dowdall also said there was evidence of Eastern European lorry drivers being increasingly complicit in smuggling migrants through the traditional Channel tunnel route from Calais to Dover for a fee." warns . https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/07/06/ireland-belgium-new-frontiers-fight-against-illegal-migration/

As recently as last week suspicions were raised that;

a) French fishing vessels were towing/dropping boatloads off in sight of UK coastline &

b  ) Borderforce and/or others on HMG/Charities payroll 'just happened to be in the right place at the right time' (inc out at sea) in order to pick them up; the implication being that they're little more than a nautical taxi service.

Suspicions are one thing facts are another.

The majority of migrants intercepted in the channel are returned to France.

If getting from France to the UK is as easy as you and others want us to believe, why are tens of thousands of them still camped out at Calais and other French ports?

I would like to see you and Katie Hopkins try and live on Asylum Support!

Of course, many illegals don't get even that, as to get it you first have to present yourself to the authorities.

Surveillance does not equate to arrest. I'm sure les grenouilles would be happy to see the Calais "jungle" gone asap.

"Les grenouilles" being unable to do British coast guards jobs, it would be wise to return the border to England asap.

As British citizens we'd have to settle for JSA for which we have paid, along with the one in your link. If we needed housing too we'd have to join the queue.

Mate, just try even getting on the waiting list in some places. But that is down to bad government, not immigrants.
