A Pattaya business leader has stated unequivocally that tourism from "the Asian zone" is his priority.

The Chinese market remains important but new tourists from Japan, Hong Kong and Macau are especially being wooed.

In a Pattaya News story not a single mention was made of visitors from Europe, Australasia or the US - except in the blanket term that said tourism to the resort was 40% Thai and 60% foreigner.

Ekkasit Ngamphichet, president of the Pattaya Business and Tourism Association, was clear in stating that tourists from the Asian zone were the present and future of Pattaya.

He repeated earlier assertions that the New Year figures showed Pattaya was in for a good time both this year and beyond.

He pointed to what he called new markets in Japan, Hong Kong and Macau.

He hoped that a "Roadshow" style of promotion would draw even more visitors from such countries.

Plans were in place to enlist the help of hotels and OTOP (One Tambon One Product) in showcasing places to stay and things to buy at a biannual trade fair in Thailand.

It was not reported that the Roadshow would travel abroad.

As regards the Chinese Ekkasit accepted there was a falloff in tourism from China but the government was helping to address this with various measures.

In addition the FIT or non-group tour Chinese were increasing. This would not make up for the shortfall but it would help.

He said that apart from the "Roadshow" Chinese bloggers were being invited to take part in activities connected to what Pattaya News

Ekkasit recognized the power of Chinese social media in getting the Chinese back on board. termed "Fam Trip".

IMHO if this air quality continues to get the publicity it has been denied for years, Thailand wont have a tourism industry.BKK and Pattaya are in panic mode ,as they try in vain by spraying water on streets and roads to lessen this disgusting dangerous air..

Yea but what about the Indians .. He's gonna miss out on 15 of 'em blocking the pavements outside restaurants whilst 10 minute discussions go on about how to slice up the one 300bt pizza they are contemplating ordering before entering the resto' if they are missed out in the woo'ing .. As for importance being put on the Chinese , that'll please the bargirl community who I'm told only come to Patt' to see the Johnny Farang's .. I wonder why that could be ..

people will not come anymore

People read internet about your very unhealthy pollution country

And Thai people don't care about it and just burning garbish etc Every day and night

If Thailand not realize online world is a powerful thing and stop all this burning etc Thailand will end up with so polluted country as Chinese

Yes Pattaya needs more Japanese visitors.

Agree they are the best mannered Asians around here. Maybe that's why they are scarce, not oblivious and not going going to put up with "it". Regarding all the other tourist nationalities here- it's a no winner.

It seems a very 'burning of the bridges approach'. It is well known the large Oriental tour groups deter the tourists from say Europe. Although it might well be an economically sensible direction. The transition is going to take time.
