Windless Bangkok strangles in smog, but forecast improves

Bangkok’s air pollution crisis worsened on Monday as predicted, with 23 locations along main roads and 16 other areas reporting unsafe levels of PM2.5, the health-threatening airborne particles 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter.

The Pollution Control Department recorded 89 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic metre of air on Rama II Road in Bang Khun Thien district, 88 in Khlong Toei and 83 on Charansanidwong Road in Bang Phlat district.

The safe limit is 50 micrograms.

On Sunday there were 18 locales along roads and nine other places where breathing was hazardous to health, and the PCD said the situation would be worse on Monday due to weak winds and fog-prone weather.

But Tuesday should be better, it said, based on the weather bureau’s forecast of stronger breezes and a rising airmass.

It said Tuesday’s PM2.5 levels would nevertheless still likely be considered as “starting to yield health impacts”.

Heard Gov't blaming current pollution problem on farmer's fires in Cambodia!! There's a new twist on what is a problem created by motor vehicle exhaust emissions in BKK + the overcast windless conditions + lack of any rain & no effective Gov't action!!

Believe Gov't needs to deal with the M/V emissions probs, including own Gov't vehicles (Buses, trucks etc)!!

Think about the weather to come as being the Hot Season w/ high temps, little or no rain & windless , anybody think conditions will improve???

Typical Thai.  They blame the Cambodian farmer's fires while ignoring their own farmers who continue to burn the Sugar cane fields.  They are much closer to home.
What is the saying.  "take the plank out of your own eye before you look to take a splinter out of anothers"

Government is (partly) right for the first time. Cambodia has sold its soul to sugarcane conglomerates from a big country to the north. Not fair that the Thai farmers are not seen as a cause.

Try farmers and others' fires in Thailand!  You don't have to go outside the country to find field burning contributing to the local air pollution problems.

Yes, but you can easily control your own farmers from burning the fields and creating pollution.  This should be the first thing you do!  After you have done this, then you can ask another country to do the same.

Really.  You gotta be kidding me.  We're two to three weeks away from the Great Annual Thailand Burn Fest where the rural Thais set fire to their forests to clear the under growth so they can come back at the beginning of the rainy season and collect mushroom which accounts for some infinitesimal fraction of Thai GDP..  Then that 2.5 to 10 ppm particulate in BKK basically becomes Thailand-wide until the real Rainy Season sets in.   Stupid is as stupid does.  The newspapers are replete with pictures of city dwellers wearing surgical mask that aren't even effective at filtering bacteria no less 2.5 ppm junk.  Some budding entrepreneur will make a billion baht selling fashion-wear masks and this will become a status race to see who wears the most expensive and elite masks.  <head shake>  The most elite will not wear masks at all as they will never venture outside of air-conditioned spaces.  Hummm.  But, just to keep the 'image' perhaps Rolex and Richard Mille can produce luxury face masks for the upper crust so that they are not mistaken for the poor saps who have not choice but to breath the air-borne poison?
