Thailand on alert for virus-laden Chinese pork

Thai authorities are carefully screening pork products being carried in by travellers from China and Mongolia after the World Organisation for Animal Health warned last week of outbreaks of African swine fever in those countries.

Sorawit Thanito, director general of the Livestock Development Department, said on Tuesday that officials at Phuket International Airport’s Animal Quarantine Station had on January 18 seized from a Chinese tourist pork sausage and salami found to be virus-contaminated.

Overall, Thai officials had seized nine contaminated pork products in three separate incidents, he said.

The department met with representatives of the Association of Thai Travel Agents and Thai-Chinese Tourism Alliance on January 15 and asked them to inform Chinese tourists about the prohibition on bringing in pork products without a permit.

More quality Chinese tourists possibly doing harm to the Kingdom of Thailand .

That occurred to me too, although I see China's fattest man probably isn't coming here - not on his motorbike anyway:

A poster wrote about a sign he found at BigC or so, that currently there are problems with importing pork products (no only from China but also from European countries).

My last visit to Villa market in Udon was somewhat frustrating.

Cold-cuts, salami, smoked ham from Germany and France all empty shelfs.

Related or not?

Or just too many foreigners on holiday?

It's a dilemma isn't it? All the foreign residents are legging it, and of the record number of foreign visitors TAT is bragging about, none of them know where Villa is. Or even what it is.

He inundates the food underneath, and exclaims :

'ah! that tastes much better'

Asimov replies ' no, it tastes much saltier'

Used to be they just barged in front of you in the queue for prawns. Now they give you TB or Beri Beri or something.

Progress huh?

The pork infections  are serious and the Chinese have not been forthcoming.  It's called African Swine Fever and there is no vaccine and no cure. In the past year, there were 360,000+ cases in 19 countries including belgium and Russia. The Russians had 100,000 cases and present as big a threat as the Chinese. the difference though is that the Russians have been more open and are co-operating with the EU.

It's nice to joke about it, but the health and agricultural folks have been warning about this for months.  If this takes hold in Thailand, it will cause panic and upend the food sector which is pork dependent. Transport of live pigs, and slaughtered animals will have to stop. All pork sales will have to be suspended.   The only regions which may escape the worst will probably be the Middle East and Iran.

the Chinese wouldn't worry about attrition!  100000+ is but a spit in the ocean, population wise.

To them, the more foreigners die, the even higher the percentage of the populace arithmetically becomes Chinese.

Pig Flu epidemics saves them from conquering... just sit back and wait!

Most annual trips back to Oz I usually bring in some salami and leg of ham in a cooler pack in my luggage.. Years ago Thailand had an incoming warning not bring in meats, but last few years no mention.. Is it still OK to bring in meats from abroad or not I wonder?

Nope

Big sign at Customs desk in Thai and English saying it's illegal. They also have a big box where you can dump it.

I'll type this slowly so it will give you time to come to the obvious conclusion.

Answering the previous post about bring from Oz, anyone could work out he didn't swim with it and then trek overland.

So let's make a wild guess at airports.
